Title: New Rudder Pedal User Question
Post by: SJ001 on August 30, 2017, 12:28:29 PM
Ive looked for this answer but I cant get anything solid, I just got Thrustmaster T‑Flight Rudder Pedals and Its very weird and I know it will take time, my question is if I push forward on my right pedal which way should the nose turn, I don't want to do a lot of bad practice and have to re-learn.

Humm, thinking now I could probably test with brakes, apply right brake and plane should turn right?

Right pedal, plane should nose right.

Thank you!

I find my brakes are not working but I'll figure it out

Calibrate both the pedals and the brakes in the game if you already haven't done so.

Yikes!

I have had mine set up from the beginning of time left foot forward noses AC right.. to late to learn over now.  :(

Thanks Bizman and Petey that's exactly why I asked, Ive learned many things the wrong way and its harder to start over than to learn from scratch :D

Did you ever see the TED talk about the guy that made the reverse steering bicycle? Pretty relevant to that. Never too late. The mind will snap into place after a period of time.

As a flight instructor in the real world, that's a common problem, as kids on sleds we learn that when we wanted to turn the sled left, we pushed forward on the right handle.  In both tricycle and tail wheel aircraft, the rudder peddles are wired so when you press forward on the right peddle you turn right and at the same time the rudder deflects to the right.  Notice I said tail wheel aircraft and not make  the common mistake most people make and call them tail dragger.  Tail dragger didn't  have a steerable tail wheel, but rather a none steerable skid.

I have had mine set like this since the 90's when I first got my rudders.  Maybe it may help with my deflection shooting if I switch it up?

In a simulation it doesn't matter at all. Maybe in reality (if someone would actually build a plane the "wrong" way around) there would be a difference in a knife's edge flight. Maybe stepping on the "lower" pedal is be easier than sepping on the "upper" one to keep the nose up?

Make sure that you have the pedals mapped correctly and the axis aren't inadvertently set to invert.

Got everything working, this is a hoot, already getting used to it, should have got a set years ago.

I thought a Brew could turn well, well now it turns even better, Ive been on and off this game for years out of frustration, pedals and the Rift are making this game so enjoyable!

As a general rule, when the stick is moving right add right rudder. When it's moving left add left rudder. Try to make it a habit. A flat scissors is good practice.

Petey would do the opposite unless he changes mapping.

Didn't realize that, thanks for the tip!

Look at the little ball gauge to see the effect. It tells you how coordinated you are which reduces drag.

Is the idea to keep the ball centered?

I looked up ball gauge and seen turn and slip, turn rate and coordinated flight, 2 things in one gauge.

I am going to try swapping the axis this weekend.

Do a lot of drills to reprogram. First fight you're going to push the wrong pedal.   :old:

and if you're anything like me, the second flight, the third, etc. etc. :)

Yup! and for some reason I had real difficulties when looking back,I would input the wrong rudder most times so I flew around for several hours just looking back and working my pedals.

Tip:  When looking back and you see "up" it's never a good thing...... :devil

In addition to coordinated flight exercises with your rudder, another good one is to practice "shooting with your feet" to get a feel for your rudder input and scaling.

One good exercise for this is what I call the "shoot around the clock" exercise:

1) Bring up the target at your current convergence range .target [range]
2) Get up to a cruising speed where your pipper is roughly level with the center of the target
3) When centered, fire a short burst (1-2 seconds), making sure you are unloaded and not maneuvering
4) This is your "test bullet dispersion pattern" - about a tight a pattern as you'll get at convergence
5) Then maneuver to shoot at each of the "clock" points 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 on the target, where the lines meet the outer circle
6) You can do this with our without a lot of rudder use -- but for your rudder practice, try using rudder to aim the pipper precisely on the point where the lines and the outer circle meet before shooting
7) Practice it until you can do all 5 shots (including the center) with a 2 second burst at each, in under 25 seconds with precisely aimed tight bullet patterns
8) Change the order; go counter-clockwise, go from 12 to 6 then 3 to 9, try different variations

Things to note during this practice about rudder specifically:
1) Note how much or how little precise control you have in "aiming with your feet" using rudder - you can scale your rudder axis accordingly
2) Notice that if you rudder and then release just before firing, there will be some wobble as your plane yaws back and forth to center and your shot pattern will be spread horizontally.
3) Notice that if you rudder a little and hold it when you shoot, you may get less "wobble" and a tighter bullet dispersion pattern.

This is one of a series of exercises I do to get a feel for gunnery with different aircraft.

AND ... consider scaling your rudder inputs (Like you do for stick inputs) ...allows for fine adjusts in first third of travel, the increasingly more rudder as you extend your leg.   (Technique ONLY)

Also if you rest your feet on the pedals add some deadband.

Ive been looking at the scaling, I have no Idea, can I just select enable scaling and use default (diagonal pattern) or do I have to tweak settings?

IF you like it the way it is, don't change anything.  I have my sliders set so 10-40 are much flatter (Less input) then I increase the slope from there on.  Watch the green indicators to the right when you change a slider position, then depress the rudder pedal and you can see the effect that you are inducing.
