A lot of the steam accounts are just for the trial or thinking the main melee arena is free to play, after two weeks they will probably stop playing and the numbers might drop again.
What if 1 plane was free so they can continue to play? sort of 'starter account' ?
Think about it this way... they will stop playing and there will be less players again and they wouldn't pay anyway, this way the game can have more players by allowing them to fly atleast 1 plane.
-
Just not those pesky Yak-3 and Brewsters.
B5m maybe? They have the freshest coat of paint :bolt:
-
The already have lots of free places to play.
HiTech

But what if you just perked everything except whatever Nugetx likes to shoot people in because all those other planes are way OP anyways?

Already trying to take advantage of any and everything free... Create your own FREE arena with the settings you want

I like it. The more people in the Melee Arena the better. Eventually maybe they'll upgrade to a paid sub. If not, more targets for those of us who have. Win-win.
Similar things have been suggested before. Not likely to happen.

IF a new player was allowed 1 plane free in the melee/ma for more than the 2 free weeks, make it a P-40 or Zeke.

But there we can't shoot them down.

Still don't have a paying account yet? $15 gets you all the planes. AH is on steam now. What are you waiting for?
-
How about a Storch?

But there we can't shoot them down.
You can't shoot them down only if they create a custom arena and password protect it, only allowing in those that they want....

Custom arenas are not particularly popular. Certainly not relative to the Melee. Maybe that will change.

The OP's wish isn't likely to happen because like his other wishes, this one is also a bad idea for new players and the game over all.

Understandable Vraciu...
I actually used to like being invited to the VF-17 Jolly Rogers squad practice, when they were setting up a custom arena each week....kinda wished I would have been able to join them and fly with them more back then when they invited me
It is what one makes of it... Back when Aces High went Live, and our squad members started showing up in bunches from Air Warrior and War Birds, we all agreed to set up h2h arenas and practiced learning the differences of AH from the other games were migrating from...in just 2 to 3 weeks we were ready to dive straight into the MA and CT....
Again, it is what one makes of it....

I think it's a great idea and if it brings/keeps players in the game (which I believe it will) then all the better.
It's academic. Hitech isn't going to change it. Time to move on from this topic once and for all.

I hear ya. The old 8-player arenas are what convinced me to pay for Aces High. Good stuff.

I disagree. What one plane could provide just enough performance/utility/ease of handling to both be reasonably competitive (to hook a player) and bad enough to motivate them to buy a subscription to get all the planes?

Doesn't really matter since it will never happen any way. That's pretty clear from Hitech's response.
Still a 109 or Spit would probably do it.

P51B...lack of guns alone will make anyone interested in the dogfight want the 6 guns but it is good enough to handle the MA fight to include bombs....the free tank would have to be the Panzer H.
Risky gamble....how many players who play now would be like F it I'm not paying $15 when I can play in here for free. -1

There are exactly 40 players now, and this would be prime time for my time of playing..... not exactly encouraging.

Maybe not a plane. Something done by the computer today. Mannable troops. Queue up for the next troops transport, and patiently wait to be dropped. Might be interesting enough to stay, gives an opportunity to watch, and might motivate to sign up later?
-

Where exactly are you at in the world, if this is your "prime time for playing"?
It is roughly a 1/4 past midnight PDT right now at the time of your post and prime time for most is normally starting around 8 or 9:00pm for most where ever they may live... Alaska, Hawaiian, Japan, Guam, S. Korean, Asia, Australian, New Zealand etc... Players most always will experience low numbers when flying during their "prime time hours"
Try encouraging your friends and people you know that like gaming, to come join you

issent that about a full server in cliffs and war thunder?

You know that cliffs is one time fee and war thunder is free with grind to win or pay to win.
There needs something more to be done in regards to subscription to have also more players today.

I am just saying you won't experiencing more players in a server in those games at any time.
And yes more effort could be made. however steam is a great step forward already.

nugetx, how many of these different WWII Air Combat MMO games have you alpha and/or beta tested and actually spent 6 months + playing , to get your ability to compare any of them?
just curious, since you keep comparing AH to other games
-
I do? AFAIK I was replying to a post.

This isn't IL2...This isn't war thunder.... It isn't gonna be like those games either
If you want your friends to play for free create a free custom arena and let them play for free with you...

In European 'daytime' at least (can't really comment about US 'primetime'), they don't really work. Usually only one person in to keep the arena open. Or they are password protected (with 2-4 inside). It is commonly this way. In the MA this afternoon (for me) there were 19 players in the MA (for at least the hour I checked). There was one in the TA during this time (although not actually flying).
While I don't agree with Nuget's apparent wish to turn AH into whatever other games he favours, I do wish ways could be found to permit gameplay in some people's primetime.
Not a very American-centred observation, I know. But AH numbers are shocking for some of us.
-
To compare the numbers that nugetx experienced when he posted at 3:17 AM EDT U.S. time
I logged in right around/before 7 AM EDT U.S. this morning and there were 24 players playing...
Within roughly 30 minutes +/-, the numbers playing in the MA had climbed to pushing nearly 60 people playing in the MA...
That is just for the MA, their were others playing in the WWI arena and some in custom player made/hosted Arenas....
Wish I could have stayed, but I was already an hour late getting to previous scheduled plans
The numbers sure looks like they are improving!

I think I have observed the pattern that there is a minimum core number which causes the numbers to grow fast. Be nice if a way could be found to encourage them to stay at a certain minimum level.

I had the 8 Player arena and it hooked me after a few weeks. I loved those. Instant action. That system might work better than just a single free ride would because it lets the new player try them all out.

Critical mass.
Yes, that is a good term for it.
-

There could have been 41 players. The problem isn't with the game.
-
I have always said you get what you pay for. If you are strictly a free player you are going to move from game to game and never get good at any of them.
People will find a way to pay for what they really want be it a new phone, sneakers, or whatever.
Steam will help find those players that will invest to be part of this experience and the game will reward them unlike anything they have encountered.
To be here we all have invested more than the $14.99 a month.

There were plenty of good sticks in the 8 player arenas. I'm sure some were not paying.

You're right. There was a bunch of Finns I know of practicing to be good enough not to be laughed away from the Main Arena. Many of us were invited by Kanttori who had tried the game for some weeks. I registered my GameID on September 23rd 2001 and activated my paid subscription on January 9th 2002.
I still have the early emails saved. Among those I found the H2H arena rules for our training sessions: Type Finns Only in the arena description to keep all slots to our own group. If some unknown pops in, politely ask him to leave a couple of times. If that doesn't help, combine your forces and kill him continuously until he leaves. If nothing of the above helps, use the .eject <playerID>. The eject command should be used cautiously and only when nothing else helps.
There used to be some extraordinarily beautiful maps, both strategically and landscape wise.
-
I think a free plane in the MA is a good idea.. that would be a way bigger hook set than the old h2h days.
Maybe it could be rotated? I-16, p40 type of planes.
-
Rotated might be interesting... It doesn't even have to be a low end plane. I think the best hook would be something from midwar. Carry a little ord, have decent guns, just can't run from the late war stuff. I wouldn't give them something like the pony or we'd likely lose about 1/3 of our subs overnight. ;)

-
I was kind of hoping that all these weeks of nugetx was not going to come to this. Sadly all he ever wanted was Hitech to put AH3 on Steam and make it a full time free to play so he wouldn't have to spend any money on a subscription.
-
I don't think a random / high ENY / single plane would work as an attraction anyway. People have preferences and habits. Also not stupid enough to be free-to-die cannon-fodder score-fillers.
-
I am not so sure. They'd get to see what was going on in the MA and get to interact with the people there, but not be able to do as much as they could if they had a subscription. That might be a significant motivator.
Like I said, it likely shouldn't be a bottom of the barrel plane to be fodder, give them something they have a chance in if they fly well.
Wiley.
-
Hard to believe they have habbits in a game they are getting to know...
Habbits would be geared more towards already subscribing players.
-
SpitV or 109F and PanzerF.
What the forever freeloaders who are praying for this will will not catch on to, with either of those two fighters, they will just up the full time PtP players skill at removing them quickly from the sky's. And knowing AH players as long as I have, they will start keeping a casual list of the free loaders and make a point of targeting those planes first anywhere they can. With that comment, nugetx and company will whine that is exactly why a late war ride as a forever free to play ride "must" be given to them to make free to play work for the freeloaders. And that would be the first blundering step down the rocky slope to closing the game doors because of Steam.
-
Habbits would be geared more towards already subscribing players.
I meant habit as in always choosing the most competitive, or the most challenging etc. Preferences might be what brought them here in the first place. The P51-D Cadillac of the sky sort of thing.
What the forever freeloaders...
Of course there's a difference between forever freeloaders and the longer exposure that will lead to long-term players.
I see the bigger present problem being this 'Critical Mass' issue, as Vraciu termed it. I am a European player. Perhaps many forum members haven't even experienced it, perhaps some can percieve the tail end of it that wasn't there two years ago, say.
-

Bustr you are genius, you have given me an idea.
Actualy, the late war planes should be perked then. It would work wonders for the game, because the '1 plane' pilots would have a early war/mid plane, and the subscribers would also have to play the earlier planes, resulting in plenty of different planes in MA.
The 1 plane pilots wouldn't whine because the subscribers would also be on equal terms with them.

I like it. One free plane. Keep it in good health, because when you get shot down, you lost your one free plane. Take your pick. Might even teach these new ones how to actually fly.

I know this is a business and not charity, but it's not 2000 anymore either, standards of the industry are changing, and the current subscription models are going away.
Just giving hints with other people what could potentialy work for the playerbase, as like everyone else so as I would like to see this game have a big playerbase because I enjoy it as everyone else here, and with a few tweaks here and there I believe the game would be in much healthier state.

2:17 in the morning, not anybody's fought that there are not a lot of players on-people do have to sleep.
actually 40 players on at 2:17 in the morning is pretty good, used to be 30 or less.
so stating a time frame is a lost argument.

:huh have you forgotten all the post he made wanting to change this into a actual WWII game, with actual historical countries and battles, like in the scenarios, where you have to go fight japan or Germany etc. with the same goals from WWII, fly for miles or drive for miles to engage the enemy.
have you forgotten that?
-
2:17 in the morning,..., people do have to sleep.
Yes. Even in Europe. And Japan. And Australia....

there you go thinking you can read peoples minds and the future, even if some people don't come back-right away-they know the game is here and may come back eventually when they tyre of easy no challenge games, or having to buy higher tier tanks or planes, maybe they will tell there friends who are looking for a challenging game.
and what Plane do you suggest a 1st timer get for free, because it's not just the plane that counts-it's the pilot as well- the plane and the pilot are like a team. just because a new player is flying a P-51D doesn't mean he/she can't get shot down by a good pilot in a lesser plane. I once shot down a 262 with a A6M5..Wantex shoots me down with his A6M's no matter what I fly. with a subscription they can fly any plane they want except the perkies until they earn the perks in the MA. like you have been told on numerous occasions build your own arena-fly offline, fly WWI, just quit trying to change this game into your game.
we veterans of all 3 countries are trying to help the new players learn the game, but if they don't want our help that's on them. and if you actually played this game you would see that.
oh and by the way, I do play until 2 to 3 in the mornings most times. Thursday night I was on until 5am Friday morning.
