Title: 'Swatting?' Seriously?
Post by: Arlo on December 30, 2017, 03:15:02 AM
(http://www.kansas.com/news/local/crime/hno4xk/picture192111959/alternates/FREE_768/122817standoff_fs1)

"The person who was to be the target of the swatting sent a Tweet saying, “Someone tried to swat me and got an innocent man killed.”

Livingston, the deputy police chief, would only provide the block number of the home where the shooting occurred, not the specific address. Police were seen in the front yards of two houses across from each other at the corner of Seneca and McCormick.

Dexerto, a online news service focused on gaming and the Call of Duty game, reported the argument began over a $1 or $2 wager over the game.

“Normally this is a prank, but due to the high stress situation, sometimes it is closer to a death threat from a user trying to get cops to kill them,” one man told The Eagle in an email.

The officer who fired the shot — a seven-year veteran of the police department — will be placed on administrative paid leave, which is department policy.

Police expect to release more information later Friday."

I think this needs to be a federal crime, it is playing with fire over the telecom network.

...... and must not see a lot of the comments on 200 ....

I've had 200 squelched for years. It became juvenile central and I don't have the patience for that (I was busy enjoying a game). :)

Has there been swatting/personal threats made on that channel by someone who makes the game a personal vendetta?

Swatting happens when streamers accidently leak their address...I'm sure most people aren't putting that info on 200...but there's definitely been plenty of stuff said by "honorable" stand up players that are almost just as bad as some kid calling a the cops on some streamer.

This has been going on for quite some time actually.
Some people just hate to lose.  (especially if they are the ones hosting an event)

Tell me the lesson, have I said something bad on 200? Calling someone stupid for their gameplay isn't anywhere near what I'm talking about...not in the same ball field.

Then there are those that take things a bit too personal and take to hating others for that. Relax. I'll be wishing you a Happy New Years while you want mine to suck before you know it. ;)

Just a troll....

Seems your go to term when you get uncomfortable. You might be surprised that I don't dislike you in the least. I just don't like some of the things you do or say and I'm not the least bit shy in saying so. I guess that means I'm more into supporting the community than your fragile ego. My hope for you, in the New Year, is that you'll learn to get over it. You have potential, in that regard. :)

It is and some or all states have their own laws too.

There is a wichita PD that lives down the street from me.  He can’t say much on the shooter and PD keeping low key.  Guess KBI investigateing the shooting part and working with FBI on the caller.

If you're looking for some sort of equivalency for justification by going to your 'troll' whine then good luck with that.

I'd suggest less thin skin and more character building effort.

`Tis the season to get over all that. Try putting it behind you. Don't jump to conclusions that all my posts are actually about your behavior in the arena (you took 'There's a lesson in this' way too much to heart. But then again, I let you ;) ). 'The lesson' was in general terms.

" ... but there's definitely been plenty of stuff said by "honorable" stand up players that are almost just as bad as some kid calling a the cops on some streamer."

^This isn't good for the game. I have to take your word for it happening. Ch 200 ain't my thing. But the lesson is just that. Let it go ... let it goooooo ..... :D

This would go a lot faster if you two just whipped em out and grabbed a ruler.  :old: :old:

Regarding the OP... it is truly a sad state of affairs when the youth of today can't accept that a game is a game. I hate to use the word 'entitled' because it seems to get thrown around a lot when describing millenials, undeservedly. There are many bad eggs in the carton, and they always seem to stink the most. I hope the two "gamers" get punished, but mostly the idiot that actually started the process of the swat raid. I hope the officer that pulled the trigger learns to live with his decision and that it doesn't haunt him forever.

Your age group raised these millenials....you are the reason for it, they were raised by your generation.

Every generation was raised by the previous generation. I guess that's how blame was invented and personal responsibility was avoided. Or maybe it's a regional/social circle/fad thing because it never occurred to me and my friends to try that when we were growing up. ;)

As a 23 year old millennial with no children of my own, I beg to differ.

Though your aim is misguided, your point stands to an extent. The generation that raised mine certainly did not do us justice, but there comes a point when the parents can no longer take responsibility for the actions of their children.

To blame an entire generation for the sweeping generalization of the entire next generation is simply put, pretty dumb.

From an outside view it's almost like your police are an occupying military force dealing with a hostile civilian population. I know it's a generalization and I'm sure it's not like that everywhere.

The more urban the area, for the most part (though there have been exceptions).

I agree Vulcan.  When the police even in their reporting use the word 'civilian' in the place of 'citizen' it lends itself to the outside view at least, as a militaristic relationship between police and the populace they serve.

Being ex military and ex police it is an appropriate view. A product unfortunately since the 60's. The prevalent use of ex military hires to police forces without adequate decompression time from military transition and training to differentiate from the military 'enemy' view of 'civilians'.

My opinion from both sides of the fence anyway.

On edit: it was an easy observation to me to see the parallel views as a grunt dealing with the military terminology such as 'slopes, dinks, gooks'  and in the police shift briefing room transition to 'scumbags, scrotes, punks'.

Well you really can't say this is a thing only millenials do, prank calls of this nature have been going on before millennials , just the methods have changed. Millennials are no different, than the generation that raised them.
Also no matter the incident that sparked it, the officer was still wrong to shoot an unharmed man, even though he was reaching, there was no weapon.

Name one AH player that has been arrested for Swatting, calling in bomb threats or any terroristic threat against another player or HTC.

While there are some toxic players (like yourself), this community is far more tame than the majority of online games.

he was reaching, there was no weapon.

He was shielding himself from the light that they put in his face. He couldn't see and was probably confused about what was going on. There is also no way he could have heard that officer being so far away and speaking so softly.

They should have confirmed if he had a weapon or not. With that light in his face there is no way he could make an accurate shot if he had a gun.

Terrible incident.

Blaming one generation for the purported faults of another?  Such a broad spectrum of scapegoating.  Personally, I prefer to be a little more specific like blaming religious or ethnic groups, it works better for me.  :noid

Also, judging by how this thread is going...

You have to choose to be nice.  It is a lot easier to be mean.  No matter how stupid you are, you can be mean.  To be nice you must be at least smart enough to recognize what does not matter and ignore it.  It's all absurdly easy to take umbrage to what someone else says, or does, and then one up them.  Then he one ups you, you one up him, and so on and so on.

I see folks in this game that rather than go from throwing a spitball, to shooting a paperclip, to snapping with rubber bands...........well they escalate a bit more quickly.  They go from throwing a spitball to Global Thermonuclear War.

Just try thinking about what you are doing.  Are you hurting the game or helping it.  Are you hurting other people or helping them.

Think about what you are doing before you create a thread such as this.

Think about what you are doing when you and another guy have decided to attack and try to emasculate each other with every thread they can, and then just don't do it.  I don't care how educated you are, or pretend to be, you are still just stupid, because you do stupid things.

The game is real.  The people that play it are real.  Stop pretending that it and they are not real, and that it is OK to be a jerk, or a fool, or act stupid.

I started the thread because I really couldn't believe how far gamers in other communities take personal vendettas and I was glad that, at least, this game hasn't hit rock bottom, in that regard. Then it was brought to my attention that I was wrong about the AH community, somehow.  :headscratch:

I seem to recall in the wayback a rumor about some dolts might've been trying to plan on fisticuffs at a con, or somesuch, but it was so dumb I don't recall the details.

Zoney's right.  Ack-Ack's also right, we've got it good.  The worst we've seen here is about a 2/10 on the jackwagon meter compared to some other communities.  Swatter should go to jail for a long time.  Not sure what should be done with the guy who gave the false address.

The cop... rule 4 waiting to happen.  I will say I think it's awfully easy to say should've after the fact.  From what I've seen with other incidents, SWATting people seems to generally involve outlining a situation designed to put the cops on edge where violence has already been done and they're intending to do more violence.
