Title: WC 2018
Post by: Bruv119 on June 03, 2018, 02:24:53 AM
so I know there are loads of football (Soccer) fans on here.  What are your picks for the World Cup?

Seems a pretty competitive wide open field to me.  No stand outs, so it should prove exciting.   Only Joke will be if England don't make it through to the qualifiers.  Have to beat Panama and Tunisia!!! surely!!

Good to see Trump put in a STRONG bid to host 2026 along with Canada and Mexico everyone working together to achieve greatness!

Egypt probably has the best chance ever to go through, their group is terrible!  With the Egyptian king anything is possible, plus he has extra motivation from the injustice of the CLF.  Wonder if they can play Spain at any point? got to love a bit of Karma.

I'm mildly optimistic about England, the youth setups have done much better at tournament football recently following a more German approach and whilst we have no stand out superstars I do think they have a better team ethic this time.  That matters the most and we have 3 goalkeepers all much better than Joe Hart!  who has cost us the last 2 tournys.  So maybe not this time but hopefully next Euros or WC we go semi finals at least!

Hopefully Harry Kane and Vardy can prove difficult for opposing teams one being a typical centre forward (haven't had one since Shearer) and the other used to pouncing on teams with blistering counter attacks when we don't get much of the ball.  Lets be Leicester!

every 4 years.... "little hopeful for england" - which is english for "we'll win this time for god sakes !!!!"
and invariably they get boned by someone along the way :)

As for Poland, we will probably play 3 matches: ( old polish joke about World Cup )
opening match ( we're hopeful here )
do or die match ( we messed up first game and we absolutely have to win this one )
match for honor ( and now we're playing for honor only cause we're sure out )

I have Germany to repeat in my brackets.

I cannot believe that there are still people that thinks that England is good at soccer. They havent been good since 1990.. Even Sweden has a better track record in the WC since 1990..

But i have no idea of how this WC is going to end, (except that England will not win  :neener:), But i guess the winner is going to be one of the usuals. Germany, Brazil, France or Spain.

In bold are the two I believe to survive the group stage and I have them in the order I believe they will finish.

Group A: Uruguay Egypt Russia Saudi Arabia

Group B: Portugal España Morocco Islamic Republic of Iran

Group C: France Denmark Peru Australia

Group D: Argentina Croatia Iceland Nigeria  (Tough group this)

Group E: Brasil Switzerland Costa Rica Serbia (Another tough one)

Group F: Deutschland Mexico Sweden Korea Republic

Group G: Belgium England Panama Tunisia

Group H: Poland Japan Colombia Senegal (bold predictions group)

What are your predictions for the group stage?

Morocco has potential. Ziyech may be one of the better young wingers and Benatia is sturdy in the back. I just don't know if they can get past Portugal/Spain. You really believe Son will carry Korea past Mexico?

This is a good prediction, safe even. As we all know, the World Cup is full of surprises. While this is the obvious group results, I doubt it will come true. Group E is so interesting, Brasil is the only guaranteed winner of the group I think. Any of the other three can make it. Even then, I think Costa Rica will handle Brasil with their counter-attack.

ill make a bold prediction . Germany to not go through.

neuer has had no game time this season and will be a liabilty, they lost to austria in a friendly, 1st time in like 30 years.

lose to mexico and draw with sweden and korea.

If Neuer proves to be in bad form again Friday, he will not get the nod in the group stage. Ter Stegen has been in good form as has Kevin Trapp. Germany is deep in keepers, so I am not worried about who is between the sticks. What worries me about Germany is the midfield roles. Apart from Kroos, they are riddled with holes. Sami Khedeira is slow as molasses and is a liability going forward, Sebastian Rudy is extremely overrated, Goretzka is young and may not show up on the big stage. Germany will have a traditional number 9 in Timo Werner, which may help against many teams. Germany has a pretty average group, so I don't fear the group stage. However, they will be matched up against Group E which may mean Brasil or Switzerland. Any of those four could realistically go through. The first round knockout match will be tough.

Neuer looked fine, plus as perd said there is plenty of depth at keeper for Germany.

Yeah, I had a hard time with keeping Costa Rica(e), Sweden(f) and Japan(h) out of the Knockout rounds. Those 3 groups will be the most unpredictable IMO.

taken from BBC website, some machine has run statistical analysis;

Group A: Uruguay 77%, Russia 60%, Egypt 36%, Saudi Arabia 27%

Group B: Spain 76%, Portugal 58%, Iran 35%, Morocco 30%

Group C: France 69%, Peru 68%, Denmark 35%, Australia 27%

Group D: Argentina 82%, Croatia 57%, Iceland 35%, Nigeria 27%

Group E: Brazil 90%, Switzerland 51%, Serbia 31%, Costa Rica 28%

Group F: Germany 79%, Mexico 60%, Sweden 34%, South Korea 27%

Group G: England 71%, Belgium 71%, Tunisia 32%, Panama 26%

Group H: Colombia 77%, Poland 50%, Senegal 45%, Japan 29%

Only surprise here is Peru, who must have done well to qualify against the likes of Chile who I thought were superb last WC.

These all make sense, obviously. I think we all know it will not be this straightforward. Peru is a surprise simply because of Chile. But, this World Cup is missing some constants (Chile, Netherlands, Italy, USA).

They didn't qualify for the WC this round...

While the bookies have their money on Brazil, we need to watch Germany and Uruguay - both have strong very teams.

I suppose I should add Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana to the list of notable absentees.

Uruguay will not be as strong as many might think. They are strong going forward, but defending may be an issue for them. I am not sure if Cavani and Suarez can do all of the heavy lifting.

so one thing I've learnt about this WC,  Kaliningrad who knew that this territory sits in between poland/lithuania on the baltic coast cut off from the rest of mainland russia?

Talk about Brexit this place is surrounded by the EU and the Russian navy has its baltic fleet and nuclear capable missile systems based there.    :old:

5 - 0 !, the other day when I was thinking about what might happen I thought that perhaps 2 - 0 was a possibility.  While I don't follow the Saudi team, they have always seemed to have been very well coached.  So up against Russia I expected a closer game.  (For those of you who are unfamiliar, a 2 - 0 game is usually considered decisive, a 3 – 0 game is a blowout, 5 – 0 is a rout).

Two Stats, when taken together, tell an interesting story.

Possession: Russia 39% Saudi Arabia 69%
On Target Goal Attempts: Russia 11 Saudi Arabia 2

Argentina 1-1 Iceland

Goal Attempts on Target Argentina: 18
Goal Attempts on Target Iceland: 4

only game that has been pretty poor so far was last night croatia vs nigeria.

good use of the var yesterday.  players will have to adapt and learn that doing the sneaky little fouls in the box will be highlighted and punished.  turned out that they missed the pens anyway but good to see.  less cheating more goal opportunities.

They got out of jail big time at 1-1 with 10 men very silly for them to make that foul edge of the box.

I cashed my bet at 1-1 anyway so still quids in!!

Left drivers?

How this turned out so far
taken from BBC website, some machine has run statistical analysis;

Group A: Uruguay 77%, Russia 60%, Egypt 36%, Saudi Arabia 27%

Group B: Spain 76%, Portugal 58%, Iran 35%, Morocco 30%

Group C: France 69%, Peru 68%, Denmark 35%, Australia 27%

Group D: Argentina 82%, Croatia 57%, Iceland 35%, Nigeria 27%

Group E: Brazil 90%, Switzerland 51%, Serbia 31%, Costa Rica 28%

Group F: Germany 79%, Mexico 60%, Sweden 34%, South Korea 27%

Group G: England 71%, Belgium 71%, Tunisia 32%, Panama 26%

Group H: Colombia 77%, Poland 50%, Senegal 45%, Japan 29%

Only surprise here is Peru, who must have done well to qualify against the likes of Chile who I thought were superb last WC.

Will Harry get the Golden Boot?

In bold are the two I believe to survive the group stage and I have them in the order I believe they will finish.

Group A: Uruguay Egypt Russia Saudi Arabia

Group B: Portugal España Morocco Islamic Republic of Iran

Group C: France Denmark Peru Australia

Group D: Argentina Croatia Iceland Nigeria  (Tough group this)

Group E: Brasil Switzerland Costa Rica Serbia (Another tough one)

Group F: Deutschland Mexico Sweden Korea Republic

Group G: Belgium England Panama Tunisia

Group H: Poland Japan Colombia Senegal (bold predictions group)

What are your predictions for the group stage?

Group A: Uruguay, Russia

Group B: Spain, Portugal

Group C: France, Denmark

Group D: Croatia, Argentina

Group E: Brasil, Switzerland

Group F: Sweden, Mexico

Group G: Belgium, England

Group H: Colombia, Japan

I only missed 3 in the group stage (Germany, Poland, Egypt).

cant believe Spain have gone out against russia.  Russia had a plan from the outset (to defend and go for pens) and Spain just couldn't find a way through.   Glad ramos is gone because he has made ronaldo look saintly recently.  in the 115th minute Pique gets wrestled to the floor and after conceding a VAR penalty in the first half gets denied one.

How can VAR work if the guys reviewing the footage choose to ignore hard evidence and then let it go just for the hosts/bribes/ lack of cojones!

Annoyed at both teams for making me sit through that boring game.   Least Croatia and Denmark had a better game.  Very fun penalty shoot out for the neutrals, super human stuff from schmeichal (< spelling) shame his guys couldnt take a decent penalty.

Now for todays games.   Brazil to win by a slim one goal margin,  Wont be surprised if Mexico come up with something this WC has been pretty mad.

Belgium have to beat Japan as they looked so good and Japan very fortunate to get through their group.

Only one of those teams has lifted the cup before.   Remember this is a new England they are young, quick and all play with superstars.  The media pre-tournament have been working with the players and not hyping everything up.  The way all the big teams keep getting knocked out is probably not helping that because we expect so much more of them now which will be there un-doing.

Only teams that have impressed me as potential winners so far are Belgium or France and I'd expect one or the other to make the final. England's half of the draw is a lottery really. The extra rest the team have had may well tell in the second half against Columbia but the matches against Sweden or Switzerland and then probably Croatia could go either way.

The whole world could see the foul. Makes one question why it wasn't called.

The talking bobbleheads here, not that I recall, even mentioned the infraction.

lukaku missed 2 easy headers fellaini 1,  with the height disadvantage Belgium should have kept floating the ball into the box they would have scored 10.  For some reason after the equaliser they stopped doing it.

Credit to Japan for pushing for the winner which cost them on their own corner it deserved to go extra time just for the amount of effort they put in.  Belgium seemed very complacent up to the point where they got their fluke of a 1st goal, that's when they started to believe they could get back into it.

Brazil next so should be some game.  Belgium will have to give it all in that match.

For today Sweden to edge the Swiss out by one goal.

England to win by 2 but we will take anything as long as we go through.    :pray

Belgium vs Brazil has all the hallmarks of a great game so will be 0-0 needing extra time and penalties.   Can't call this one, if Belgium play to their best they can do it but I suspect Brazil can go up a gear or two if needed.

Belgium were the better team offensively tonight but de bruyne didnt have a good game and they were a little unbalanced with their right winger suspended chadli was no replacement for him.  lukaku didnt get enough ammunition and France soaked up all the pressure.  From an England point of view id rather play france than belgium.  just have to get through now but I have a bad feeling about those croatians they have looked a solid team.

With the possible exception of the French, I suspect the entire world agrees with you.

not sure what happened at half time we looked comfortable and in control just no second goal to go with that wonderful free kick.

croatia upped their game 2nd half and got their goals through poor defending.  could have been 4 4 with all the chances that went a miss.  when they cleared stones header off the line for us to go 2 1 up in extra time i knew that was it.  least they saved us from another penatly shoot out i dont think i could have watched.

if i was being overly critical i guess we could have started without young, sterling and henderson  but they managed to get that far so he stuck with the starting 11.

good luck to croatia in the final ill be cheering for them.

No worry England, 4th place isnt bad  :D

It would be one of the greatest moments in the history of sports if Croatia beats France in the final, i dont expect that to happen though.

the england team werent expected to do anything this WC.  they managed to beat a bunch of average teams including sweden.

maybe the its coming home thing is misinterpreted as arrogance when it isnt.

itv and playing in white both need to be banned though.  :D

Oh England is arrogant when it comes to football, you have a habit of grossly overestimate the capabilities of the national team  :D
But its hard to not like a team like Croatia, a small and young country, players like Modric grew up during the war and they have lost a few players, like Ivan Turina, so they get a lot of sympathy as the struggling underdogs that beats the favorites. (Even if they really wasnt underdogs as they are at least as good as England).

As for Sweden we did far better than expected. Winning the group and advancing to quarter final with those players is a great achievement.

I didn't watch it full time. Hydroplane races were being streamed and between races would take a peek. From what I saw, the hydroplane races took precedent.
