Title: Time for 2018 college football
Post by: Brooke on August 15, 2018, 03:06:00 PM
It's getting close now!

I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm eager to see how the mighty Wolverines will do this year with a new quarterback, lots of new coaches (including some very impressive ones joining up), and adjustments on offense.

We get to play Notre Dame as our first game, so no creampuff start for us this year, and the rest of the schedule is quite tough.

Texas A&M has a very impressive recruiting class for 2019 so far.

Tennessee's 2019 isn't shabby either.

Don't know, but they said the investigation would take 14 days, and that is coming up soon.

I'm a Wolverine, but I don't dislike Urban Meyer.  I hope it turns out that he did report things as he should have.

Go Thunderwolves! If you want to see some good ball check out D2. I lost interest in pros (Broncos) and D1 over the years but my local D2 school restarted a football program and have done great. Big fun and cheap to attend the local games and tailgating too.

CSU Pueblo. Had an NAIA team until 1984, dropped the program. Locals invested in new stadium and restarted program in 2008 in RMAC Division 2, just in time for me to retire and come back to town :D. In six short years (2014) they took the National Championship. Looking good this year for a probable run into the playoffs!

For the first time in 20 years ( or whenever Tom Osborn retired from coaching ) there has been no pre-season diatribe from the nay-sayers and critics of the NU coaching staff.

Scott Frost, as the new head coach of the Huskers, is treated as the return of the prodigal son. Very possibly the nearest thing we've had to Coach Osborn since his retirement.

The excitement is real. I hope Coach Frost can get the program back.. or at least significantly closer, to the glory days of when he was taking snaps...

Go Huskers!

It will be interesting to see how it goes with Frost in there.  It does seem he's the perfect fit.

Where do you think Nebraska will come out in Big 10 west this year?
Title: Re: Time for 2018 college football

Where do you think Nebraska will come out in Big 10 west this year?

No freakin' clue.

I'm assuming we can toss away any predictions based on last year's performance due to the new regime.

We really won't know until they start playing.  If Frost goes back to Nebraska basics, it will be a ground game where the O line just beats up the defense until they're too weak to stop them by Q4.

Last year the QB wasn't an option QB.  That just isn't Nebraska football..  and the result wasn't that surprising.

Do they have an option quarterback this year?

What did Frost run at UCF?

Do they have an option quarterback this year?

What did Frost run at UCF?

I'm assuming so.

Last year, Frost was actually running options plays as QB during practice at UCF.

Best way to show how to do it right, I guess.

It will be great to see Nebraska as another strong competive team in the big ten.  tOSU being top dog for years follow PSU, Mich, MSU, Iowa and Wis is getting boring.
Title: Re: Time for 2018 college football
Post by: alskahawk on August 19, 2018, 11:15:56 AM
Yes, us Iowa fans are watching the Scott Frost situation with some selfish interest. I don't think Nebraska will rock the football world this year, their schedule does them almost no favors. But we should start seeing some improvement in their competitiveness this year.
Title: Re: Time for 2018 college football
Post by: Brooke on August 19, 2018, 02:26:07 PM
It's an outrage!  The Wolverines are never boring!   ;) :aok

Consider 2016.  They lost to Iowa by 1 point, to Ohio State in double overtime by 3 points, and in Orange Bowl to Florida State by 1 point.  Heights of excitement right down to the last!

Even in 2017, the collapse in the Outback Bowl was of such epic scale that you could watch it in bemused wonderment, exclaiming, "Wow!  You don't see that very often!"  :uhoh

This year, it will be exciting to see what they do, and they have a hellaciously challenging schedule abounding with big games.  It will be glorious!  :aok

Minnesota might be as well.  I was surprised to see Minnesota get rid of Claeys.  He was doing a good job.  Fleck looked like a good choice.  His first year there didn't go well, but it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Alas, the two teams I most wanted to win -- Michigan and Washington -- both lost.

There was much complaining and gnashing of teeth on Michigan message boards.

I watched the game today (as I wasn't able to watch it yesterday).

It wasn't as bad as all the complaining.  Michigan lost by one touchdown, unfortunately, but I was pretty happy with the quarterbacks and receivers, actually.

Ug. Sparty couldn't pull off the win either.  And Northwestern got clobbered by Duke of all places.  And Purdue lost to Eastern Michigan.  And Minnesota had its hands full with Fresno State.

Patterson is good and the future seems secure in McCaffery's hands but our tackles specifically Runyan really need to work on their feet and hand movements, there's been several times where Runyan has looked lost and just"In the way" and rarely does he get his hands on people before they get into his body. The late hands and flat feet at this point may be hard to over come and I wouldn't be opposed to see a younger guy get a shot as the oline is the weak spot, but it's early and maybe the oline will start meshing and the tackles may get better. Losting Newsome was a huge loss. RB's look good Higdon and Evans are known commodities but Tru Wilson looked good as well.

They did look pretty good in the game.  They were quite good in 2016, ending the season ranked #17.  That year, although losing to Michigan, they beat Oregon, Stanford, #22 Washington State, #22 Utah, and barely lost to USC.

Alabama hasn't had any challenges yet -- but if you are scoring 50-10 against lower-conference teams, it's still an indication that you are pretty good.

Auburn did play a highly ranked team:  Washington.  It was a great game, which Auburn won by 5 points.

I don't think it was quite as heartbreaking as you would think.  It proves that having the first game cancelled really hurt, as a few of the mistakes were due to the first time facing an opponent. ( fumbles, in particular )

The Huskers played well, but self-inflicted wounds probably did the most damage.  ( while waiting for the verdict on if assault charges will be filed on the guys responsible for wrecking Martinez )

Pity Tristan Gebbia left.. he would have had the opportunity to step in and be the hero once Martinez was taken out.

Whereas there are high expectations here, I honestly doubt very many actually believed we'd be back at the top of the heap the first season.

But, then, again.. maybe they do.

Still should be a fun season.  At least they're running the ball again.

The Huskers have issues.  Some of those kids are doing stupid things at levels we didn't think was possible.

I have no doubt that Coach Frost will get things straightened out. It may take a few years, tho.

Title: Re: Time for 2018 college football

I don't think Nebraska is as bad as the score of that game would indicate.  They came very close to beating Colorado, which is a decent team; and they lost to Troy (which is not a horrible team -- look at what they did last year) with the Nebraska backup quarterback in.

I think Nebraska had a bad day while Michigan was very psyched up for that game.

Look at Oklahoma vs. Army.  Does Oklahoma suck?  No.  Is Army the #6 team in the nation?  No.  But Army had a great day, and Oklahoma (at least defensively) was not having a good day.

Look at Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion.

Things like that happen.

I think Scott Frost is a good coach, and Nebraska will be on the rise.

Jim Harbaugh is the most overrated over paid coach in college football.

There is said it.

Title: Re: Time for 2018 college football
Post by: Brooke on September 25, 2018, 03:59:36 PM
Actually, Harbaugh has been doing a great job and is well worth the money he is paid.

Here is why.

Michigan football annual revenue is $127M.  That was in significant jeopardy prior to Harbaugh arriving because the program was averaging seasons of 7-6 under the previous two head coaches and was no longer a top football program.  Michigan needed a coach who could turn the program around quickly *and* give an immediate morale boost to the fan base.  It was fortunate and a very good business decision to bring in Harbaugh.

Harbaugh took that program, which had a 5-7 season prior to him arriving, and then went 10-3, 10-3, and 8-5.  If the 2017 season results had come first in that list rather than last, doubters would have a different opinion.

Also, in the 2016 season of 10-3, those three losses were by 1 point at Iowa, by 3 points in overtime at Ohio State, and by 1 point vs. Florida State (in a year when Florida State was good, ending up ranked #8).

Let's take Saban as a comparison.

His first three seasons at Michigan State as head coach were 6–5–1, 6-6, and 7-5.  At LSU, his first three seasons were 8-4, 10-3, and 8-5.   At Alabama, his first three seasons were 7-6, 12-2, 14-0.  So, yes, at Alabama (but not MSU or LSU), he had a better start than Harbaugh at Michigan.  Of course, Saban at Alabama is perhaps the #1 football coach in all of history, so a coach can still be good and not meet that.

PLUS....it sure doesnt hurt that FOOTBALL in ALABAMA is its own denomination of PRACTICED RELIGION :rofl In news reports, the QUOTATIONS of Coach Saban...yup IN CRIMSON LETTERING  :rofl  I have actually seen Coach Saban quotes on the Marquee Signs outside of churches. In my time living among the "Un washed, Bamatists" I learned why HUNTER ORANGE is NOT required(other than a hat) on Deer hunts. If you were to wear 500 sq inches of "ORANGE".... :uhoh you may be confused as an VOLUNTEER  :devil Seems there is NO bag limit for this strain of VERMIN. DNR officers WILL ALSO drive miles out of their way to check Licence and Registrations of fishermen sporting TN colors as well. Sometimes repeatedly(5 times in 1...9 hour span) on Lake Guntersville :furious

PSU's play-call was terrible on a 4th and 5, but the fact that they blew a 2 TD lead is what lost them the game. You can tell they're really missing Barkley.

A&M is quite good, I think.  I also think they'll start being one of the top teams with regularity.  They've got money, they've got a good coach (as long as he can keep from hitting players in the face mask), and they are in Texas (a great recruiting ground and fanatical about football).

It's also good to see Texas seemingly get back to being good.

Which ones do you think are most vulnerable?
Just now reading this.

tOSU: They got lucky against PSU.  We know that Buckeyes have a history of getting to comfortable late in the season before somebody knocks them on their ass.  MSU/MU could do that.   Huskers maybe...you just never know.

MU:  they played like crap today against MSU.  Next week will be another challenge for them..... I would give PSU the benefit of the doubt.  Lion has the heart to play and win no matter who it is.  Against tOSU.....no doubt that Buckeyes will win but as I previously said they have history to relaxing too much.   Then again, this is the biggest revival of the season and it the only game that matters for both.  Buckeyes need to get to the 9-0 winning streak (currently 6-0)

LSU:  They will have a tough game today and believe they will lose.  Besides Miss State, Aggies is another threat to knock them off and no doubt Alabama.

Texas:  Another nail bitter game today against cowboys......but personally i think Texas not good enough to be in the top 10.

GU:  Sold team and should breeze through every game with a win...BBUUUTTTTT..... they have FU and we all saw what they did to LSU.

The defense was amazing.

The offense had its issues, certainly, but they did score 3 touchdowns and looked very near to scoring a couple more.  They also managed a bunch of rushing yards against the nation's #1 rushing defense.

I think it looked like crap mainly because they had so many opportunities that they didn't finish on.

The first rankings by the College Football Playoff committee get put together tomorrow.

Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame will probably be the top three.

But it could be LSU, Georgia, or Oklahoma.

I am surprised LSU is #3 with Notre Dame at #4 instead of vice versa.

There are all sorts of conspiracy theories about that choice.   :noid

Alabama is so very good every year that it seems inevitable that they get in, but there are still some tough games out there for them.  So, while their schedule seems weak so far, it won't be by the end of the season.

Clemson seems to have an easy schedule all the way through, so we might not know if they are really a top team until the playoffs.

Coming up on another interesting weekend of awesome college football!  Woot!

Who will win, Alabama or LSU?  Odds say Alabama, but LSU is mighty good.  Will be fun to find out.

Notre Dame plays Northwestern.  You'd think ND wins easily, but Northwestern has been on a tear lately.  Another fun one.

Michigan vs. Penn State -- a grudge match for Michigan for sure against a very good Penn State team.  Go, Wolverines!  :aok

Georgia against Kentucky.  Seem's like an easy with for Georgia, but Kentucky is rated very highly by the committee.  They must see something in Kentucky that a rank amateur like myself doesn't.  Looking forward to seeing what happens there.

Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech.  Can TT give them a run for their money?

WV vs. Texas might be a good one.
Title: Re: Time for 2018 college football
Post by: Skuzzy on November 01, 2018, 11:44:14 AM
Texas Tech does not have much if a chance against OU.  As long as the TT quarterback telegraphs every throw, they are going to struggle.  The defense is pretty good, but the offense keeps finding ways to give the other team points.

I was so disappointed in my Longhorns last week.  They should have demolished OSU.  They better get back on track this week because they are going from a 'gimme' to a 'gonna have to bust butt' game this week.

No, but Michigan should be assuming Ohio State will play very, very hard on Nov. 24th.  Also, Ohio State has had some years where they looked bad in a game or two but were still a great team.

Purdue is looking great this year.  :aok

It's looking like Northwestern has a lock on the Big 10 west.  Iowa game could go either way, but I think Northwestern will beat Minnesota and Illinois.

It's an odd year in the west.  Like lots of other people, I assumed Wisconsin would take it all easily, and I sure didn't see Purdue rising up.

Does not matter to me as I have to root for the old alma mater (Longhorns).  That West Virginia loss stung.  I wish I could have been surprised by it.  The only surprise was the way it came down.

If they do not beat Tech, I am going to Austin and beat the defensive coordinator about the head and shoulders.  There is no excuse not to get, at least, 3 interceptions from them.  If you cannot win after that, then you need to just stop playing the game as it becomes nothing but embarrassing, for everyone.

Anyone gonna watch the Toothless University (Tennessee) play the Kissing cousins Academy (Kentucky)?

I don't have a dog in that fight but two coworkers do and I plan on making that game very uncomfortable for them both!

A lot like the year Auburn BEAT Bama back in early 2000s. I was working and living in Al. EVERYONE was either a Bama fan or Auburn(they show up in numbers during a winning season  :rofl). I didnt have a dog in that one either..sure was gonna be fun either way it turned out. That was the same year I figured out WHY AL didnt require 500 sq inches of Hunter Orange for Deer Hunting! You could be mistaken for a TN fan :rofl That weekend, the Bama/Auburn game was ALMOST as fun as the year TN won it all(was first year in AL during FB season). The AR game :uhoh Right at shift change folk coming by JUST TO RAZ ME about getting HOG WHOOPED...45 seconds left and down, AR had the ball...made it to my truck JUST in time to hear ARs QB had fumbled...then we scored and WON.. YES SIR..I went right back inside and was 2 hours late getting home  :rofl Only rubbed it in a wee bit :devil  Then came the next season and the MEMPHIS game   MAN I hated Pam Tillis's song after that one :uhoh It was all I heard for YEARS. Maybe it was MEMPHIS :furious

This weekend has a lot of interesting games with respect to the top of the rankings.

Alabama vs. Miss. State.  Yes, it's Alabama, but Miss. State is a good team, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

Clemson vs. Boston College.  Sort of same dynamic as above.

Georgia vs. Auburn -- that seems like a good matchup.  Auburn has been inconsistent, but there is a lot of talent there.

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State.  Ok. State will dial it's effort up to 11 on that game, so it could be a good one.

I'm rooting for the Coweagle Bulltigers.

Miss. State has a great defense (7th ranked in S&P+), but a middling offense.

Against Alabama, a team needs both to be very good to have even a chance.

Wow, it was an interesting week in the Big 10.

#10 Ohio State had an amazingly close game with Maryland, winning it in overtime 52 to 51.

#4 Michigan had a much closer game with Indiana than expected, and unfortunately had two players injured in two separate dirty plays.

Nebraska beat Michigan State, 9 to 6.  When was the last time you saw a score like that?

Wisconsin played Purdue to 3 overtimes, finally winning 47 to 44.

Just goes to show you never know who is going to show up to play for the Longhorns.

I was concerned when they only had a 3 touchdown lead going into the 4th.  Any other football team and it's over, but the Longhorns have found plenty of creative ways to blow leads in the 4th.

I think that there were no bigger programs that wanted him yet, and he got tired of waiting around, so he went for it.

Good for him.

Heck, Kansas can't be too horrible -- they put up 40 points against #6 ranked Oklahoma!   :D

Yes they did.  They did play well.

Problem with KU is they keep firing coaches every three to four years or they quit.   I know they are trying to get a coach that will rebuild the program and maybe Les will do that.
KU shouldn’t worried about the Basketball program.
Title: Re: Time for 2018 college football

It probably won't be easy, but the bar of success probably isn't that high.  Kansas's record in the last 5 years is:  3-9, 0-12, 2-10, 1-11, and so far this year 3-8.  So, if he can get them even to 6-6, that is a huge improvement.  It will be interesting to see, and it's nice to have Les Miles back in coaching.

I went to this game too. We should have gone for 2 after the second touchdown we scored.  Wiscy called TO to ice the extra point.  That was the perfect time to switch up the play, because you only get one TO per OT, they couldn't have adjusted.

P.s.  Louisville, you can't have our head coach.  Sorry not sorry.

I thought this would be Michigans best shot to beat the Buckeyes. #1 defense in the nation, only loss to a great Notre Dame FB team.  Instead they lost by the highest points scored against them in the history of the rivalry.  They had no defense at all against the Buckeyes.  Haskins threw 5 TDs' and broke the single season Big Ten record of touchdown passes thrown.  He threw 41.  Buckeyes had well over 500 yards of offense.  Michigan played hard.  Hats off to them.

Wait till next year?  Harbaugh have a future there?  I hope so.  There will be no BIG Champion in the playoffs this year unfortunately.

Congratulations to Ohio State on the win.  They played great.

With that win, they do have a chance to be in the playoff, assuming they also handle Northwestern well.  The reason is that, while Oklahoma has a great offense, so does Ohio State, which has never been in doubt.  But now Ohio State has shown it has a good defense, too, which Oklahoma does not.

I wish Ohio State didn't choose this game to finally pull their team together, but they did.  Now I wish them all the luck to go as far as possible.

They had the turmoil of an assistant coach charged with spousal abuse.  Urban Meyer has a brain cyst that causes horrible headaches.  Some say he may retire at the end of this season to be with his family considering his health situation.  His  Wife Shelly was crying today after the Michigan win.  Maybe after the Championship Game he will announce his retirement.  Who knows.  They have a good Head Coach candidate on Staff already.  Brian Day, the offensive coordinator who Coached the team through Meyers suspension.  Tom Herrman is also talked about as being Ohio States next Head Coach.
He coached the offense during the 2015 national championship.  He was credited with making Cardale Jones the Quarterback he was during the Championship run. He went to Houston and brought their program back. Now he's doing a great job at Texas.  If I were a Longhorn Fan I'd be worried if Urban Meyer retires.

No doubt Myers will step down this year.   Too many talks about it and I am sure the team and staff got that speech from him already.   Nobody saying anything.

My guess is Day will be the head coach and heavy favorite.  Guess we will wait until Myers make the announcement.

One thing about that game is you never know who will be the victor.  It does not seem to matter who has the better team, on paper.  There is just something about that rivalry that transcends the statistics.

Wolverines vs. Gators.

My 8-year-old daughter told me today a great lead in to the battle:  "Will the Wolverines get snapped up by the Gators, or will the Wolverines shred the Gators to pieces?"

Florida is a good team.  I'm looking forward to the Peach Bowl and hoping that the mighty Wolverines can play their best and achieve a great victory.  :aok

I think it will come down to which Feilipe Franks shows up.  The one that plays solid and doesn't make a lot of mistakes which opens up our run game, or the one who looks confused and can't seem to locate wide open receivers.  He's been solid of late so we'll see.  I don't think I'm going to be able to go to the game so I might have some tickets available if anyone's looking.  I should know for sure by next week.

I definitely wasn't expecting my beloved Wolverines to get trounced.

We'll get them all next year!  :aok

That Cotton Bowl was hard to watch.  Had to be embarrassing for Notre Dame.

The offense has sputtered all year, Jim needs to loosen his hold on the idea of a 1990's style offense working and open it up a bit. The defense simply can not carry the team all year long.

The offense at times looked great (Penn State, for example).

There have been games where the offense sputtered, and the defense was great (MSU).

There have been games where the offense scored a lot of points, but the defense let through a fair number of points (SMU, Maryland) or outright collapsed (The Game).

The Peach Bowl was the only time both offense and defense had major problems.

The talent of the players is very high, so that part is looking very good.  There needs to be a lot of work on plays and strategy this off season for both offense and defense.

Way ahead of you Brooke.  The Boulevard Barrel Bourbon Quad was flowing.  The pizza was good too!

The win was not a surprise to me.  Texas has talent and should be a contender.  They are just young and like most young teams they played inconsistently throughout the year.

Watch them next year.  They should be a top 10 contender, easily, maybe a top 5.

They also have Tom Herman as Head coach.  The architect of the 2014 Ohio state offense that made a 3rd string QB a winner.  I watched the game and was rooting for Texas.  If you watch ESPN you'll note in reality they are the SEC network.  I loved it when I heard the Texas crowd chant "Over rated".  BIG won the majority of their bowl games again  5 and 4 I believe.  Michigan I can't believe.  Another Bowl game loss.  Maybe they should quit going on vacation and start worrying about playing football.  World tours are great don't get me wrong.  Playing football and playing football well is what the objective is.  When is that going to sink in at Michigan?

WTG Texas well done.

They need to hang on to Todd Orlando.  He has done a really good job turning the defense around and they needed it, badly.

I am hoping this next year is going to be a big one for the Longhorns.

Sure is nice to say I support the Longhorns and not hear people giggle anymore.
