Charging an EV requires 40 amps. I expect that qualifies as "major"
that is correct. forgot to add including evs.
but we are also in the middle of a heat wave. by 10 am it feels like 1000 degrees. so far we haven't had any brown outs or loss of electricity. I have my ac set at 78 and not by choice. that's the coolest it gets when outside is 108.
but the grid is holding up, just like it does every year. and every year they ask to cut electricity between 4 and 9.

If they're asking that, the grid is over-taxed. Can't say I understand the WHY of it, but grid crash is supposed to be a nightmarish thing that requires far more than rebooting a few PC's to rectify

No they are telling you when not to charge for now...
Amazing some here try to excuse the oddest behavior regardless just to try to justify it ..
We had the same Sunday booze restrictions but evolved out of them here..and both are control otherwise you could charge your ev whenever and buy your booze at sunrise on Sunday..

I know nothing about the power grid. but I do know they're asking people to use less electricity to prevent the grid from being overtaxed not because it is overtaxed.
if the grid becomes overtaxed they have protocols to include having rolling brown outs. they normally only last a few seconds or a couple of minutes. that's what they're trying to prevent.
big difference than the grid is gonna somehow blow up.
by the way texas also asks people to use less electricity.

I may have said this before, but the most perfect scenario is to have a big enough solar array to charge an EV during the course of a day, and have 2 electric cars, one of them always on the charger

they're telling us? well I watch the local channels, I like the news. they all ask us to use less electricity.
contrary to your belief, we have no electricity police. nobody breaks down the door to make sure my ac is set to 78 or that my washer is not being use.
I was doing errands yesterday and saw no swat team at the metro station that has ev chargers to enforce the telling.
and the only people that try to control us is in your head.

that sort of thing doesn't happen unless you mistakenly sign off on it, like those people in Colorado did

Big story last week about a community in CO who had control of their thermostats taken away from them, and it was then set at 78 degrees. They had signed an agreement with their local power company, never thinking THAT would happen. Lol, couldn't happen at my house, we have no ac, and heat with a wood stove

Or just have a hybrid.

Totally pwned big brother there, but another option is AC with analogue thermostats.

yes they have that here. you sign the agreement and in return the electric company either gives you credit or pays you. it's a good thing you get credit whether it gets used or not. but you aren't forced to do it
they took the money and some started whining.

I know that in California they were warning us once again not to charge our electric vehicles. Well not that I have one but meaning in the state.
If they don't fix this power grid I don't see how we're going to support millions of more electric vehicles.

lol, not really my intent there --we live in a 70-year-old stone farmhouse that's 3,000 feet up, admittedly it would be nice to have air conditioning and late July and early August. Heating the place is a far bigger chore

They actually specified to not charge electric cars in the evening. I guess you're supposed to charge them during the day when you're driving them.
or at night when you are asleep.

WELL, they said not before 10pm. What if you have the sort of job that requires you to be at work at 4-5 or something, thus you'd be asleep well before 10pm? (Whatever that pay might be, it's not enough)

it would have to be 10s of thousands of Tesla owners. but even then you plug in at 7 or 8pm then go to work and plug in there too.
or you can do like me, went to check everything and found out I forgot to close the window in my bedroom and office. then I notice the small fridge in my office was on, haven't used it in weeks. also noticed the power strip to my cc omputer was also on.
so I like to think I made up for one of them poor souls that have to work at 4 am. I used to start work at 530. but in my case I didn't get up till 5.

I could never, EVER do that. Most the times I've ever been awake at that hour were because I hadn't been asleep yet. (I.E.--the 70's/80's) My company of the last decade or so doesn't care WHEN I shop up at the job site (within reason) I don't sleep well, out of 7-8 hours I probably get 3-4 hours of good sleep, always wake up feeling like crap. I DO have to show up at 7am now and again, it's hell and a lot of coffee
