Title: Anything interesting going on in the world today?
Post by: -gg- on June 24, 2023, 10:17:46 AM
It's Saturday morning and I haven't even got out of bed yet. I'm usually out of bed 3 hours ago. It's 8:16 where I'm at.
I think I'll get up and cook breakfast. Bacon and eggs with French press coffee!
Then I'm going to finish mixing a song that's going to be released.
Today is a good day.
Oh. World events. Can't talk about them. But I'm going to get up and get breakfast pretty soon.

I'll take this opportunity reveal that I have co-founded a new band called The Jetglows. Working to release two songs pretty soon.
We have lots of songs, but it takes a lot of time for old people to put stuff like this together. It's work. Writing the songs is easy. Mixing them and getting them produced, not so much.

Seriously, if you guys want to talk about what's going on in Russia, head over to https://icecreamonmars.com/ (https://icecreamonmars.com/)
This is history in the making.
This thread was half serious. I know a lot of people are watching as things unfold and it's shame that it can't really be discussed here.

Oh.
I sold a vintage acoustic guitar on Reverb.com Guy that bought says he found over 12 microscopic blemishes on the top and that he is going to have the best luthier in the country refinish the top.
I sold the guitar with NO REFUNDS and it's in absolutely incredible condition. Nearly flawless. Bazillion rosewood and cedar. Hand made. 50 years old, ALL original. No fret wear. My uncle bought it new - sat in the case. I'm the second owner.
Anyway. I told the guy if he's not happy with it that I will gladly buy it back. I told him he's crazy of he refinishes that top - it will devalue the guitar 50%.
I don't get this guy. There are no visible marls on the top. It's near mint. Anal as hell , I guess.
Had lots of pictures of it.
oh well.
I'd take the guitar back and just keep it. I was on the fence about selling it anyway

You know I used to look at GG's shameless self advertising as attention seeking (no offense gg). But to be fair it is proven time and time again it is impossible to discuss anything on this board with out it turning into a pissing matched and eventually a locked thread.
Hell we cant even discuss a 111 year old shipwreck with out it degenerating into conspiracies about the main stream media and how terrible their politics are and how great ours is! Fully grown children we all are :)

A little off topic, but did you know that most of our Military submarines have a max depth of 2,500. I found that interesting. There are a few that can go much deeper, but not many. Hope we have subs in the game someday. :joystick:

I was just reading about that the other day. Was curious because of the Titan submersible situation.
That's still a long way down. For such a huge boat.
Also read about the Scorpion, which imploded - they think laterally.

It's not attention seeking. Just that I see this place as a joke compared to what it was back in the day. In the old days, it was full of life. Interesting topics and people. Now it's moderated into what it is now.
Seriously just wanting to be able to discuss real things and can't. People are WAY too thin skinned.
Honestly - look at ICOM right now. It's people that originated from here from 1999 or so on. It has real discussions.
I was thinking about this place as we were discussing Russia and thought - you know - a MAJOR world event and no one even posted a peep about it over here.

The window was only rated for 4,000 ft. and the CEO knew that, yet went down anyways. I could care less if it was just him, but he sold tickets and took passengers. Then there's the Carbon Fiber sides.. lol (that didn't work out well) The nose and tail were made of Titanium and that's why those were found intact.

I mean, those are the rules and they've been in place for a long time. You keep complaining over and over about it but you are still here.
From what I can see it's the same usual suspects that get stuff locked, whether it's politics or trolling or the same 2 or 3 people getting into a pissing match with personal insults back and forth. Titanic thread was seemingly fine until it went off the rails with conspiracies and politics.
Round and round we go!

As far as threads being locked here -
Some people here really like how the place is moderated. That's fine.
In my view, why would you lock a thread an penalize the OP just because a few other people derailed it? Everyone else loses because a good topic gets permanently locked.
The better approach is LESS moderation. Let people ignore the people they don't want to heart from.
We've been calling thus forum "NK" for years. Since about 2008.
Good content is being shut down because people here ( or the mods) have very thin skin.
Yeah - they say it's a business and that kids are here. Really? How many kids do you think come to ANY forum?

No, I was only certified to 1,300 meters. The man who pointed that out, along with other concerns, was fired. That man said the company that made the window would not certify it for a lower depth and the CEO of the sub company didn't want to pay for a 4000 meter certified version.
I'm pretty sure lateral pressure is just as much on these subs. Why the people would cheap out on the window is amazing. Doesn't matter how strong the rest of the death tube was/

Why does a pissing match need to turn into a locked thread? CLEARLY, most of you aren't married. Barb and I argued for a solid half hour last night about the plot line in the latest Star Trek Strange New Worlds episode. (STILL pounditated her later;)

Fire up the smoker and make steaks, potatos, and corn on the cob. while the smoker is warming up I'm going to install some springed hinges on my screen door. Toss the steaks on to smoke and the other stuff in the oven Run to the store for some distilled water so I can sanitize my still for my stripping run tomorrow. Come back, flip the steaks and rotate the veggies, Rewire my pc so all my USB's on the CH gear is direct into the machine and try it out. Do some research for work so I can bank those hours because I have tomorrow 'off' to watch over my still. I'm doing my first spirit run Tuesday after I get off. Yesterday I was pretty busy.

I'm just cleaning the shop, organizing the new tool box, and hauling garbage.
Later I'll be tearing down two transmissions, and ordering parts for them, and a 283. And I need to price some 9" Ford stuff to build a rear differential.
Would be a good day to drag out my Pro Street Breakout and take a ride, but there's too much work to be done.

I went to a D2 college due to poor SAT/ACT scores, (hated those tests) with a very competitive highschool, and still thought I got a better education than many at D1 and Ivy League schools. Mostly because of smaller classrooms where I could really engage with the teacher and they could engage with us. The hardest class ever was 1107K major biology course I took on accident where the teacher spoke to hundreds of us in a class and just wrote his words down on a white board and you had to go back and read the book to understand what the heck he was talking about. The tests were brutal where you had to memorize specific cycles, write them down completely, and also explain why you chose the multiple choice answer you did which was worth more points than choosing the correct answer. Barely passed that one with a C. Luckily science was one of my best subjects. Very tough with Calculus and 3 other classes. 15 hours a semester with tough classes ain't no joke.
Even though my college was easy to get into, and was also about 30% black to 70% other races, it was a very tough college and most people didn't pass. It had a very high drop out rate.
Point is. It doesn't matter if you simply get into college. It matters how much you take it seriously and want to actually learn. I don't believe any "race" should get a pass in admission. "Race" doesn't matter one single bit. It's all about the individual. What really hurts more is, kids going to college and then dropping out with student loans. Then they have no education and a bunch of money they have to pay back on top. I recon this would actually hurt families far more than anything.
Furthermore, I recon that a lot of kids shouldn't go to college, but instead to a trade school. College doesn't really teach "working with your hands" it's more theory based. Trade schools would cost these kids far less and they'd probably pass and have much better careers overall without the debt. College ain't for everyone. Hell half the stuff you learn you don't even use in the real world. I thought accounting in college was confusing as hell, sure enough I became an Accountant during my second job and realized it suited me well. I bascially had to teach my self accounting with youtube videos and "live and learn" for the last 10 years, where I've been fortunate to work with over 18 businesses.
The real problem I see now, like I did, was expecting to make a big salary out of college. That is not the case, and throws many kids off, who now struggle to pay bills and pay off their loans for atleast 10 years. College teaches hard work, but doesn't teach you how to work hard. The business world is far different than college. A person could pretty much start young in a business and know far more about the business than a college grad just starting in business. What is really really tough for college kids is doing all of this hard word, only to enter the business world and enter POs all day for $12 an hour, like me, boy did that suck. But I didn't let that stop me and my ambitions.
It's not a matter of race, it's a matter of ambition and working hard to achieve what you want. Even learning Aces High is the exact same thing. No one should get an easy pass because it will only hurt them in the future when they are expected to do something difficult. No one should expect an easy pass, but everyone should be taught that if they work hard and work smart, they can achieve success in America. Playing a victim never ever works out and just because you got into college doesn't mean anything.

People are being brought up on the GIMME FREE HANDOUTS ideas and thought process. Then when they find out that they have to actually work and put effort into making their way through life they just give up and demand handouts due to their laziness. Thats why some colleges and high schools have such a high dropout rate. People rather be lazy and live off the system rather be a productive member of society. Or go to a college to get some BS degree that will do nothing to help them through life, then demand someone else pay off their loans

A lot of kids are screwed by their public school systems. They graduate with straight A's or something and think they're smart. Then they get the college spend the first two years taking classes subjects they should have learned in high school

My sil played college football. Played with a pretty decent team. Played with Antonio Brown.. won a championship.. blah blah blah... He described to me that very scenario as an athlete...
You think you're hot stuff. You're THE guy. the game comes naturally to you. You're more dedicated than everyone else. You show up early and stay late. Then you go to college... Now, EVERYONE is hot stuff. Everyone is THE guy. The game comes naturally to EVERYONE. EVERYONE is just as dedicated (if not more then) as you. EVERYONE shows up early and stays late...
Then that same scenario repeats itself at the pro level.

A lot of kids are screwed by their public school systems. They graduate with straight A's or something and think they're smart. Then they get the college spend the first two years taking classes subjects they should have learned in high school
Or you can be like my wife and take AP classes and pass the test so you already get credit and don't even have to take the class in college and only need 3 years to graduate. Smart prettythang she is... I didn't have take late US history because of passing AP exam. Thank goodness.
But I totally agree. The first 2 years is really stupid IMO. It's a total money grab. I guess they wanna see if you can actually pass the classes and figure out what you wanna do before going into the major. Like my college, had to have atleast a 2.8GPA to get into the business school. Still totally worthless to have to take literature and some other classes.
Also high schools are basically in the bag to push college or else you'll be a failure for the rest of your life. Bascially how they put it. This puts a lot of pressure on kids and parents to take out huge loans. It's pretty much loan sharks x10. Rather than really understand where a kid should go based off their interest or what they excel at. They just say, "go to college or bust". Many of these kids would be so much better off at trade school.

Heck.... Community college paid ME to go to community college. I literally banked around $600 each semester (sometimes more sometimes less depending on books). I literally stopped using my GI Bill money. It was a better deal for me to just be po rather than a po vet.

Ice freezing within the voids of the carbon fiber tube section is what caused the damage that led to implosion at depth.
Seeing the submersibles Oceangate owned sitting outside in snowy/freezing conditions makes it obvious.

It's not freezing down there though.
The experts are all saying the same things. Untested carbon fiber being stressed by multiple dives and finally giving in. From pressure and release of pressure. Carbon being brittle and not used for this purpose for a good reaon.
This guy new better though.

The damage didn’t happen “down there” but “down there” is where the ice damaged cylinder failed.
Same thing happens to boat engines that weren’t winterized properly. Ice within expands to the point of breaking the cast iron engine blocks.

where are you even getting your ice damage theory from? Thin air? What makes you think they ley the thing ice over?

It’s basic physics……and seeing pictures of their subs in a parking lot full of snow.
The tube was known to have voids because David Lockridge pointed them out.
If water were forced into voids at 6000psi, it’s rate of evaporation depends on the the size of the opening where the water came in. The nature of spun layers means you could end up with a long capillary void following the path of the strand. If said strand was “wetted” with not enough “epoxy”, then you could end up with water that would take months or years to evaporate.
Now you freeze the tube and the water within expands around around 9% at 30,000psi……shit gets broken. It would have been much stronger if hand laid if they vacuum bagging to remove bubbles.

Add to that being pressurized from the outside. The cylinder compresses, getting smaller. This could cause sections to delaminate.

I'm just wondering where the theory of freezing water is coming from. Who's to say it's ever been in an environment that would allow the water to freeze?
The most likely thing was the port window blew out, or the carbon fiber just broke apart because it could not handle the pressure

There's a transcript of the communications that they had with the sub before it lost communications. They definitely knew what was going on. They were trying to surface. If you Google it you'll see it. It was just on the news sites last night.
They heard cracking sounds from the back of the sub. And then they tried to surface but the sub was still descending to at too fast of a rate. Then they jettisoned their ballast and were barely moving up. So then they jettisoned the frame that goes around it and they were moving up but slowly.
And that's when communications were lost.

It’s also obvious that the “door” is too heavy for the hinge design.
I’ve seen a video of OceanGate noobs struggling to get it latched likely from misalignment. Bent hinge?…..or did the big ring bend a little? Hydraulic jack band-aid after the damage.

Had a Huey crash 15 miles away a few days ago that was retrofitted as a crop duster. Saw it on the back of a small 2 axle trailer being towed by a pickup limping back to its origin airport. Tail section was busted but front was intact. Rotors were destroyed. Said mechanical failure was the cause that caused it to come down hard. Pilot was just a little injured but not that bad.

guests can post there. For now without any approval - but that might change is BOTS start posting spam
I worked on my forum this morning. Today I'm mixing the third song of my band's EP/album.
My brother was in town with my nieces and nephew. Saw them Friday. The nephew will surf ALL DAY at Huntington beach if given the chance. He was there all day Friday and some of Saturday.
I just got back from going into the shop because I spotted a door that had been left open on the cameras.
Babysitting a Maltipoo too. She's the cutest little thing! Very smart too. She's a good little dog. she listens and doesn't go running off when I let her into the yard. She sticks around the boundaries and comes when I call. That's a lot different than my baby, Ziggy. He would blast out of here and ignore my arse with no second thoughts. LOL

So, who's burning up in the heat wave?
Not SUPER hot where I live. maybe 90 - because I'm close to the coast. Still, that's hot for here. In the 100's just a little further inland.
I lived in Phoenix for almost 40 years, so I know what it's like there right now. At least over here it cools down at night. In Phoenix the low will be 90 or more. the low!

Night will be more than heat of the day.
24 hr. average, yes. I'm from Florida and 75% would be considered very high during the heat of the day. A high daytime heat index temp around here tends to be about 10 degrees higher than the actual temperature. We had an uncommon 92/104 the other day.

I just remember it as oppressive heat and then pssing rain on you in the afternoon.
It's the same here in North Texas, except no rain. At least Florida's temp is modulated by the oceans.
I was mowing the lawn in 107f heat the other day. That's actual not index. Not smart but I had been out of town two weeks.

In my opinion, the southern third of Louisiana has the worst humidity in the country. I've lived in Florida all my life and have never experienced the heat that I have out there during the summer.
