What is keeping this game alive? My answer is maintaining a presence
What say you?
There is a lot still happening in the moment that cannot be matched in the industry. I keep coming back why do you?
-
The reason I had come back previously is because of the players and the camaraderie. It is not as great as it once was as it seems many of the people I enjoyed playing the game with have moved on. It also seems that the detractors have stayed or maybe the presence has become more obvious now that the others are gone.
The thing that consistently runs me off are the mods. One of the things I most enjoy about the game is the banter on 200. I tried playing the game with 200 turned off and found it boring. Of course there are some male donkeys on 200 but I squelch them and carry on until I get muted for something like "non-game discussion on 200" or just muted without warning which I'm guessing is some clown telling all of his buddies to .report me.

LOL!!! I never left! Been here since tour 21

:airplane: Being on the no-fly list has limited my options. So cartoon planes are my option as my no-fly list criteria states.
I'm too cheap, stubborn and mathematically, and optically challenged to get a pilots license to fly. Other than that, it's still a lot of fun and challenge for me.
-
Great question!!!
I stay since there is no other combat fly simulator as fun and simple as this game. I know there are other maybe more realistic but never as easy and fun to fly. Been here for years and still thanks able to have eyes and coordination to do it.
-
I live to steal kills from 1IJack :D.
LCA are great bunch of guys. Both in game and offline. I still keep in touch with members of my old squad (Lynchmob) and frequently meet up within families and become good friends. Funny how you curse the player that shot you down, however working along that same player in FSO and all becomes like one big family.
This game has been pretty consistent throughout the years, as far as challenge and environment. I go back to it especially after the Xbox where the hacking and constant toxic play just makes you log off. Yes we have a few bad apples, but dont take this game too seriously. The very second you are not having fun, its time to log off and take a break
-
Before I came back, I DLed the rival sims to check them out and settle on something, maybe something new, different.
Those sims literally did not last on my machine more then 15 minutes. I was sucked in by the modern graphics, like many do, but very quickly found the game-play didn't match the graphics, at all. And the payment plans were a bad hook. They get you into the realm of once you invest it's harder to leave that investment. I wouldn't want to leave $300 in planes, and then end up in that no escape cycle of buy more, for those who bit that hook. They are more about emptying your wallet than game-play.
The selling of other sims is an act of desperation from the experience of lameness "please come make it more exciting for me, worth my investment". If a sim is that great, you don't have time to spend time selling it where it should not be, you'd be spending that time in it. If it's that great their butt will follow. I didn't follow.
BTW, those who claim to not fly anymore for years, still here and selling other sims, still have AH installed (I know this as fact) and still fly AH under shades. Because if you knew they flew that would minimize their sales pitches that this is over. Which exposes them as dishonest brokers. This sim has a boat load of life still in it. We have return players and increasing numbers, their numbers in both rivals, are dropping. One is said to be "dead". https://www.reddit.com/r/il2sturmovik/comments/15vmsns/il2_bos_multiplayer_is_dead/?rdt=48255
OTOH
I think it's common that people tend to stick with what they first started with, whether it be software, games, car brands, breed of dogs. I will not have any other dog but a black lab.
For me, once I experienced the adrenaline of true multi-player, it's going to be very hard to beat. I'm not going to dial it down for somewhat better graphics. I find shooting drones, now sensationalized using the term AI, is about as exciting as taking out the garbage. I need that human brain as a rival. It's me against you.
I know of no other sims that provides true MP adrenaline for me. I looked, I tried, I did not find. Before I pushed the return button, I ventured the bbs as a lurker and saw many I remember still here, even as far back as AW, that has the mental feeling of home for a lost ghost. After what I have been through in life and survived, that is a well needed and deserved endorphin release. It's the nostalgia and MP game-play. Most of the best MP pilots are right here.
I left before AH3 release, so in my return it was a newer game.
I look at AW and AH as the trunk of the tree, the further up the tree the thinner the branches, the thinner the fun as they move away from the trunk of MP. Why would I want to play wannabes that can't seem to hit the mark?

What keeps this game alive?
Players who are OK with outdated graphics and gameplay.
-
Those times when I run into a pilot that is there for the fight. Just the fight, win or lose. I lose more than win, but the fight is what keeps me here. ZE and Eagler are two that gurantee a fun time.
Back in the day, stealing each others kills was SOP for the BK's

Yeah because everyone can just go drop $3k on a PC to fly pretty planes on pretty maps.

There is payment plans available. Maybe stop making bad decisions and your credit might be good enough for the payment plan.
If a person wants something bad enough...that person will get it.

You don't need that much. I fly 'pretty planes on pretty maps', and my core system consisting of Ryzen 5 3600, RX 6650 xt, 32GB, 1TB SSD, AM4 Mainboard would cost me 500€ right now.

I love how you assume that I was speaking about myself. You know nothing about me, my credit score, my decisions, or anything. I’m just tired of seeing your negativity towards AH all over these boards. If it’s that bad, just leave and don’t look back.

What is keeping this game alive?
The old folks that have been here since day one are what's keeping this game going.
Since there are really no new players joining and you old folks are dropping like fly's, it's only a matter of time until this game is done for.
I bet HTC is barely breaking even trying to keep this game alive.
Just let it go man, or sell it to someone who gives a sh*t.
Good day.

I obviously do not know but unless there are still debts from closing the biz per se AH should be almost pure profit by now. It’s a hard drive in a drawer at this point.
But of course who can know for sure. I will play til it’s gone or I am.
-
I'm sure a lot of it is profit, since he no longer has a staff to pay.
Too bad. This game really had a lot of potential.

Is this "selling of sims" all based on the one post I made about IL2 pricing?

I still have AH installed and I still fly offline missions and sometimes FFA in match play. Not sure why that would be a bad thing.
I don't fly in AH under any shade account.
Not sure how true this reddit post is as I was just on an IL2 server that had over 40 people on a small map that was a blast.
It seems to me that you enjoy trolling because you make statements of "fact" that are not entirely true as a way to get people to respond.

Last time a game like this sold out, it closed its doors. Is that what you are looking for?
While it's nothing like pre 2012, it's still well worth 15 a month. I prefer it stays in dales hands. The guy went through a rough divorce and heart surgery and still kept the lights on for us.
If you want 10 minutes of 15 dollars, go to Burger King and have it your way.

I never thought I'd see someone giving terrible advice on credit on this forum but here we are lol.
No kidding.
That said, After many years of it's life, I think the "pretty planes on pretty maps" people would stop trying to talk people into doing what they don't want to do. If people want to do that they would have already done it by now without sad used car salesman pitches and techniques and temper tantrum trash can kicking. They don't need any reason of 100s to not do what they don't want to do. Con-Man.
Seems like everyone who makes that move comes back around like they just joined a cult and everyone should do what they did or their life will end. It's kinda freakish weirdo stuff. It also smells of desperation, clue #1. It's like they break up with the GF, but keep coming around as a stalker to bash the new BF. How many times do people who do not want that have to say no? 1000? Ya'd think that after 100s of failed attempts they'd get the point on move on. If the power of suggestion doesn't work ONE TIME, nothing will. They gonna knock on my door with a bible too?
No matter how you pitch it, it would require more $$ for many to upgrade, just to pay more when they get in, to do something they don't want to do. Spend your own money, do what you like, and move on. My advice to them is quit being a pushy obsessive weirdo, they look the damn fool. Their choice is their choice, my choice is my choice. Quit being a stalking ex-bf.
After all this, I would avoid that because they give the impression that everyone there is an obsessive weirdo freak of nature. <shudders> They probably have this obsessive problem in RL too. People telling them "enough, go away". Personality Disorder.
They can't stand that big mean old Animl presents reality, calls them out, and wants to promote AH, and it messes up their agenda to con people into doing what they don't want to do. Coming around here kicking over trash cans in their neighbor's yard, to get their way. Juvenile.
The more they do it, the more I want to stay right here just to spite dense weirdos. The king of all this still flies AH in shades, after saying he quit many years ago. Actually, several of them do. One should ask themselves "why?". Dishonest Broker.
The king of the used car salesmen actually still has AH installed and flies in shade. "I quit years ago". He also uses shades on bbs. Demented.

I wonder how many guys at DCS or IL2 have 20+ years in the game?
Do either of those games have 20 years in the business?

Perhaps a sloppy definition of the word alive ?
Even the (much older, and much more crappy looking) Warbirds is "alive". For the vast majority of simmers, none of these two sims are alive. They don't even exist. Besides, sim vs game, what's the difference? Those who want a "game" obviously flock to War Thunder. Those who want a "sim" flock to DCS/MSFS/X-Plane. Those who want a nice flight model, nice gameplay (without having to set up millions of buttons) go to IL-2 (also a game/sim). People are still playing many of the really old sim/games too. The older version of IL-2, or Falcon 4 and so on. Lots of older sims/games are "alive" and people enjoy them.
Alive in the game/simming world obviously means a game that is being actively developed. When development stops, it heads straight down into a niche for a dedicated few die hards.
Lots of discussions about this (outside the AH community at least :lol ). War Thunder and MSFS draws people into flight sims. Lots of them stay (or quit), but lots of them move on to DCS/X-Plane/Il-2 and a few others depending on their preferences. A long time ago, Warbirds drew people in, and then AH also for some limited time. That time is long gone, we are talking 20+ years. AH III isn't that old, but it was only a new make up on the old pig. Nothing really changed regarding the game play, FM or anything else.

I haven't followed how negative he is in general, but posting years of two other sims is not very negative, but rather informative. IMHO, but maybe I'm once again lost in translation.

Do the math at $15 a pop minus expenses ..I don't believe it's a sole income source these days

My best guess from Lusches most recent stats are that AH generates somewhere between $120K - $150K gross revenue yearly. Basing it on the pilot numbers per tour of late times $14.99.
Just a guess.
