I'm glad that's now available. Superior film, but not to be watched on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

I was a youngster and I think this was the first PG movie I watched. I rode my bike to the downtown Fox theater. IIRC at that time the Saturday matinee was either 25 cents or 35 cents for a single feature. I usually hid to stay and watch the next movie. Times and money were tough at that time in my family.
The Blue Max, for the flying scenes. Yeah, I know, not WW2 but it had a lot of planes and flying.
Later, The Big Red One. I was at my OBC at Ft McClellen and saw Patton in the base theater.

I was watching it perhaps 10 minutes before getting headache. T-55 in Lapland and Germans dressed as characters in some arcade boom bang crash video game. And as far from historical facts as can be.
I like more realistic ones, like this:
There's also new version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcX3yAndcH4) of it, but at least in youtube it's without subs.

Redtails..the p51 vs 262 ho scene where the 30mm hits looked like .22 shorts..
There are so many more poor war movies than good ones these days...don't think fury nor sisu should be listed with the good ones

Most people in Hollywood have no idea how the real world works. So they put out movies with stuff that is ridiculously unrealistic even when they are intending for it to be realistic.

I wonder if they remastered the sound on "Midway" which was produced with "sensurround" in mind.

I hate this gripe more every time I hear it, because everyone I've heard make it somehow forgets how the 30mm round works.
It's a high-explosive mine shell with a contact fuse. It's a grenade. It does it's damage by peppering what it hits with many little bits of hot metal, travelling very fast. And it's going to detonate OUTSIDE the aircraft, because of the contact fuse. If the "reality" you are expecting to see is a body with 30mm diameter holes in it, you are the one who is out of touch.

Lol I am saying he'd been torn to pieces as would his plane.. it was just one example of the stupidity Hollywood used in that film thus ruining it for many..

I thought the fuses had a delay to explode inside the skin of the aircraft?
Either way, contact or delay, based on the damage that can be seen on bombers that survived 30mm hits in WW2, the 51 would have been thoroughly shredded. Hardly likely that either pilot would have time to line up a HO shot when closing speeds were approaching or in excess of 1000 MPH as well. Simple hollywierd drama male bovine fecal matter.

No pretence of it being a documentary. Film goers want to identify with the heroes. Try watching martial arts movies but focussing on the extras. That's a good laugh.

Single 30 mm hits were generally fatal to fighter planes.
Here is testing done by RAF. Most hits were judged "probably lethal aerodynamically."
