Title: Friendly fire
Post by: Eagler on December 22, 2024, 03:41:27 PM
Before getting on the road to go back to the in laws, saw a clip about a navy jet getting shot down by our own ship surface to air missile...

Did that really happen or would we rather say that than admit one of enemies in the area did it..

I would have thought we had numerous safeguards against such a possibility

Seems the USS Gettysburg got ahead of herself

Don't think I would want to be his shoes..

I find it strange most news sources are still calling it "apparently friendly fire"..

The only way heads won't roll is if they can definitively show that the F18's IFF was not operating at the time.

Ward Carroll put out a good video on the topic.

I tried the youtube link above but in tiny iPhonie balonie screen makes that tough.  Sometimes I inadvertently add a space but this time it looked good but got invalid youtube link when previewing.
I used share and copy link that time IIRC for the above post.

Both this and the mystery drones have now disappeared from the news... or did I miss their resolutions?

As a guy who used to work on mode 4 IFF, load the codes and test them with the gun I can tell you that a plane would be considered hard down if the mode 4 was not working in a combat area and would not have been cleared to launch.

All the planes are tested with an IFF interrogator gun on the flight deck before they are launched with the pilot in them and the engines running. If it fails the launch is scrubbed. I find it hard to believe that the codes could have been loaded, the test came back good with the mode 4 gun and the plane launched only to be immediately shot down?

Strange how both stories have dropped from the news isn't..

New Orleans and Las Vegas will be the stories for awhile...long enough for most to forget what happened before as most have an attention span of a gnat imo

Just wait two weeks.

Prior to that point, if the pilot had indications Mode 4 was inop, the jet wouldn’t move out of the chocks.
