Title: Falcon BMS
Post by: Mayhem on June 29, 2025, 11:23:31 PM
Looks like Falcon BMS is getting a major update. Falcon BMS is a free 3rd party upgrade to Falcon 4.0 a combat flight sim that came out in May 1999. I was lucky to fly with the 209th Delta Hawks a LAN Squad that beta tested Falcon 4.0.

That's impressive.

Still Benchmark Sims and it's still free. (Still need Falcon 4.0) https://www.falcon-bms.com/ (https://www.falcon-bms.com/) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_4.0#Digital_distribution_re-releases (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_4.0#Digital_distribution_re-releases)
It has outlived Allied Force https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_4.0:_Allied_Force (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_4.0:_Allied_Force)
Note: 26 YO game kept alive by it's community looks Awesome and It's still going strong. maybe a lesson here?

Thats some cosmic debris. I’m ashamed of myself for trying to help AH instead biting the faltering DCS bait. Something I warned about 2 yrs ago. Silly me. Maybe EA can fix pretty planes.

I never liked the repeating patterns in the original terrains or the atmospheric green pea soup. The rest of the game was far ahead of its time.

It's amazing a bunch of enthusiasts can keep that moving so far forward for so long.
Weird. I was just thinking about Falcon the other day. And IL2 1946. They have added like a hundred planes or something insane since the company abandoned the game. Overhauled sound system, all kinds of amazing hacks. Not the best way to have to develop software, but they have a dedicated base willing to make that level of effort.
Why could they get so much done on completely dead and abandoned games and AH can't even get a terrain rotation list modified?
In Falcon's case, the company was defunct and someone leaked the source out. Rabid dedicated players grabbed it and ran with it out of passion.
In 1946 case, the company was still there, but no longer going to expand or support 1946 and so when it was cracked and the base started making additions and improvements they just shrugged it off and didn't officially support that effort, but took a neutral stance and made no attempt to stop them. Why not. There fact that there is still a faint pulse in 1946 just gets them continued residual sales. There are still people who go out and buy a $4.99 copy of 1946 not for the base game, but because of the universe of player mods.
So 1C continues to earn sales off a game only because they allow the base to hack it and add content they won't. Clever.
AH is stuck in an awkward middle ground.
The company is not defunct and the source is not released. There is no further development, but a legal entity still owns the code so everyone else is locked out of making changes either without violating the license.
So all you can do is skins and terrains. Both quite well done, but that is the limit. Oh, I guess someone could fiddle with sounds.

All you do is passive-aggressive attacks on this game. :rofl Pretty sure your obit will occur before anyone here would welcome you back. :aok

Dang, all these new sims graphics are getting to the point where it's hard to tell the difference between sim and reality. Can you fly planes other then the F16?

Mathematically, DCS could die faster than AH

(Raises hand) I actually bought multiple copies so I could play with my kids. I figured at that price why not.

Falcon 4 is $12 on Steam. I have the original on disk with all the manuals but still bought a Steam copy for convenience. Seems like it was $5 then.

I just got the AVA Viper Thristmaster stick and TQS throttle I think I may have to give this a try after I get my bellybutton out of testing it on Nuclear Option and soon downloaded DCS.

You may have to run the original once before installing BMS, not sure, but avoid making eye contact. ;)

Umm Falcon 4 goes all the way back to 1998/99. I played it on a P200mmx with a Matriox card and a Voodoo 1.5 6mb 3d add on card. The BMS is a community made mod.
We use to have LAN meets to play multi-player.

That was on the shelf right next to AW when I first bought AW, both sight unseen. I bought the right one. The community keeping it alive speaks volumes

I remember LAN parties. LoL. Doom, Duke Nuke'm etc.
Nothing like hauling around a 10lbs desktop box and 25lb CRT to a friends house for beer and pizza and Doom. ;)
No Warcraft or Starcraft?
I think it was for Falcon AT or a version around that time that me and a buddy manufactured a null modem cable to hook our Amigas together so we could gun fight. It was around that time that Flight of the intruder came out and I would ambush his F4 with migs. Fun times.

Just making a point.
The same people who in a round table party-line call asked me if I would come to EA as tech support with no pay, I did, now here the same people say that crap about me because it’s not their game.
Thank you too

Son and I played the first Warcraft with a null modem cable and then later our home thin net.

Talk about memories .... I remember linking up 2 computers by a Null modem cable (Serial Crossover) to play CIV II; This is basically what got me in I.T.
At the 209th Lan Meets when we had server issues a few of us would Lan play Warbirds while we waited. At the time Warbirds could do LAN. I think the box version of AWIII could do LAN and Null Modem and Modem to Modem Dial up.
I did the RTS lan stuff at UC Davis with a bunch of buddies, Mostly Starcraft+Brood Wars.
I Got my kids into LAN games back in the mid to late 2000s and early 2010s. I built every one of my kids an Upper midrange gaming rig.
Unfortunately My youngest was the only one to show any interest in flight sims and even then it was only War Thunder and Ace Combat, if you can call them simulators.
Currently as an Empty Nester, I have 2 Gaming PCs, A gaming Laptop and 2 Streaming PCs in my house all on a 10 gigibit wired and wifi 7 network, So I can still do Lan Games. It's Nice when Friends My Kids and Other Family show up.
4 of my systems can handle AHIII 2 in VR.
Hopefully this summer I can get a few local buddies to play AHIII on one of my systems. Maybe get some people I actually like to pick up the game. That and a fix to ENY/Plane-Country Lock outs and I may become a subscriber again ... till.

Not nearly as much as you did my Johnson ... Stick that in your ear and hear it.
You have an Issue with me Shane Just put me on ignore.
You're not my mom, you're a little passive-aggressive boi. If you can't take it, don't try and dish it... oh wait, that's why you don't play any longer, you're one of them checklist guys who could never dish it. :rofl

Or you could put him on ignore. He and one other on ignore totally changed the vibe here for me :)
Done.
I put Shane on ignore when I wrote the nasty that I shouldn't have. It was a low pop shot that I edit out but I acknowledge that I went to far with it.
I put "Baby Jesus Supper Star Savior of Aces High back" on ignore a while ago when he was peddling his used blow up doll.

Oh for god sakes. Thin skinned today aren't we? It was humor,... much like your own "fecal farming" comments. Shane is right, you like making insulting comments but can't take it in reverse. Whateva ingrate. Here's a clue, leave me the F alone and I won't bite back. I say the doll thing on 200 once in while as a joke, everyone takes it as a joke and laughs and laughs.... since when did you turn fragile?

THE ART OF TROLLING AND FLAMING
If you can't take MORE than you dish out, then sit on the porch with the kittens and don't do it, you guys can't even take equal what you dish out without losing your minds and going int victim mode.
Take note. I don't troll because it's for newbies.
After what I've been through in life,... 50 of you could never break me,.. ever

The F-16 is my favorite jet in the '80s and to the present. Many here may have read th Wingman series of books. Do I have to mention a little film called Iron Eagle?
I'm glad there is a F-16 featured game.

I was was stationed at Carswell in '76-'77. General Dynamics shared the runway and the F-16 put on an amazing show just about every Friday afternoon when it was still in flight testing. I'll never forget it.

The F-35 may not be as maneuverable as the F-16 but stealth and the advanced avionics and sensors puts it in a different league.

My former bass player also served on the Carl Vinson! If I remember correctly, he was actually in Miramar when they were filming Top Gun and worked on the Tomcats used in the film.
