-
first thing grab an old pc 50-75 dollar or less pc if you can find one at the local pawn shop or second hand store/pc surplus, friend . that gets you set up fast with the floppy, cdrom, monitor, sometimes a 6-10 gig hd ... this is what i do for starting a budget pc ... ussually i get lucky and find a pent 2
then id start pricing the mb,cpu, ram, video card
now it just depends on your budget ...250-500 can finish it off ussually . and dont be afraid to use a refurb monitor ive bought several 19in ones for 135-150
My last buget pc ....
Asus A7N8X Deluxe mb onboard sound , 400fbs $ 109-130
2400+ athlon oem cpu 2.0 ghz oc's to 2.2ish $80-89 HSfan $19
twin sticks of ddr ram ... what ever you can afford 256 ok, 512's better $80---->
case with a good ps 430watt perfered $60-80
toss the $$$ into a high end VC id suggest a ati 9600 pro $150
(or go with the 9800 but i think its over priced still )
toss in a hd drive of your choice ... 7200 rpm prefured min
(ive seen some decent 60 gig's with rebates ending price of $30 lately)
now your at 600.00 plus the sacrifice pc or spend the $$ on the cdrrw/floppy mouse kb . and have plenty of machine . with room for upgrade as some of the prices drop .
add cdr rw / dvd , monitor as needed
there also some pretty decent mb/cpu combo's around to ..
That can save ya some bucks ...70-100 .
just one idea ...
-
http://hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=97957
I think the total for one of the systems by itself was around $720 with no monitor or keyboard and mouse. So probably for less than $900 you can bump it up to a 800FSB P4 CPU and monitor with a keyboard and mouse and be set.
-
lol PFunk ... what we posting at the same time ...
I chose the deluxe board cause the ob sound
I punted the amd bbs for ya its got any and all info you may need
-
Also most of the time you can get an Athlon system about $100 cheaper than a P4. I just dropped the P4 line because I recently built those two and made a few bucks selling them to the company I work for.

I needed a quick cheap upgrade and put this into my existing box. It works great. I don't know much about the different Asus boards, but I got the Asus A7V8X-X. It has a built in sound card and lan card. The only card in the board is an AGP video card. I have 6 empty PCI slots :) The parts cost $239 from New Egg. This set up works great! :aok

The A7n8XDeluxe has alot of features the casual user wont utilize. Serial ATA hard drives dont have any performance that you will notice and to me isnt worth the premium to get it. Thats why I chose the Epox 8rda+ board over it. You can find used Epox boards for $45-50 The XP2500+ Retail chip comes with a decent Heatsink and fan. Put some Artic Silver on the chip crank the FSB up to 200 and you will have a $315 XP3200 for $91 not a bad deal.
-
Another vote here for the A7N8X. I got the deluxe, mainly because I wanted the built in (high quality) sound. It was the first computer I built, and it came off without a hitch. That alone says something. :)
-
I used the Epox 8RDA3+ and it went off without a hitch, too. sound, SATA RAID, 3 Firewire and 6 USB for 94 bucks at Newegg. Only hitch so far has been a cheap chipset fan which started rattling a couple days ago. Just took it off, left the bare heatsink with my cases side fan blowing on it and have had no problems for a couple days now. I do have a replacement unit otw, but not sure I'm gonna use it, as I'm not an extreme overclocker and replacing the HSF involves taking the board out of the case.
Running a Barton2500+ at non-native 12.5 multiplier for a Barton2800+ equivalent.

I just ordered a "custom" system with the A78NX Deluxe
MB in it as well.
Any difficulties with the onboard sound? ( I've always
used SB boards in the past when I've built systems )
I'm looking forward to having 4 USB ports as well. Along
with my current X35T/X36F I plan to build me a multi-throttle
quadrant using my old discarded Thrustmaster WCS units
and gameport-to-USB adaptors.
The two LAN ports is also a plus, although my current
ISP provides me with 4 static IP's so my LAN is simply
a 4-port hub connected to the ADSL modem and
my current 4 computers so I only need to use one
port right now. Room to grow :)
FWIW I've seen this board mentioned alot, in a positive
sense, in my wanderings on the web looking into
components for the system before I ordered it.

The sound on the nForce2 chipsets is GREAT. I am running the Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro with the same stuff as the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe and its a great setup. One tiny issue with them is to make sure you have the correct RAM to run on the board. I have had the ASUS board this year as well and it died a horrible smoking death so its replacement was the Gigabyte board and it going great.
-
the only problem i had setting up the asus deluxe mb ... was the "dolt" behind the KB messed up one of the sound drivers during the install ... its not really a ram or video card picky mb either like some of the gigabites are ...and the ob sound sounds great .
But I'd do the research first ... hit the amd and the pent bbs

Pfunk... I may need your help. Did you see Bloom's thread (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99359) about PC architecture? He said the XP2500 ran more slowly with 400MHz memory than with 333MHz memory. I'm getting the A7N8X deluxe with the XP2600, not the XP2500 - is the 400MHz now a better choice than 300MHz memory?
-
oONE thing he said to was it would be his TV! Ild grap an ATI 9700pro AIW ( all in wonder) it has the TV tuner card with remote!!!!!:aok
-
I think that since the XP2600's are based solely on 333 FSB's that a PC2700/DDDR333 RAM would be best for them. At least that is what I am running and it runs great with my board.

He said low LATENCY is critical for the Athlons. That's those memory performance numbers... 2 2 2 6, 2.5 3 3 7 etc etc. Your 400MHz RAM will run at pretty low latencies when running at its below spec 333 MHz for the 2600. And it gives you headroom for overclocking.
Did you get the BARTON 2600 or the NON-Barton 2600?
At any rate, if you run the memory Asynchronous (i.e. CPU FSB=333, Memory speed = 400 MHz) you WILL hurt your performance.
Performance order as I understand it for memory:
1) run SYNCHRONOUS speeds between memory and CPU
2) more FSB is better
3) lower latency is better.
But 2 & 3 can switch in importance. I.E. running at CL2.5 at 400 MHz is better than CL2 at 333 MHz, but running CL2.5 at, say 345 MHz might be WORSE than running CL2 at 333 MHz.
Running CL2 at 400 MHz, is, of course, best of the combinations. But if you push your FSB to, say 410 MHz, and your latency drops to CL3.... go back to CL2 at 400MHz.

PS - instead of spending the bucks for an All-in-Wonder card, think about this:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?description=14-122-132
cheap 9600Pro plus this card is cheaper and more "modular" for future vid card upgrades than an AIW card.

here is a page with over clocking the 2600+ w/thoroughbred core ...
http://www.techtastic.ca/reviews2/xp2600.html (http://www.techtastic.ca/reviews2/xp2600.html)
the barton has a larger L-2 cache then the t-bred 512 vs 256kb
Ive seen some other good oc site for this but i dont have them earmarked here ... try the amd forum for futher info and spec's
You can go pretty extreame with a 2600+ but you have to bring out the h2O cooling to get it there .
And for those of you running Durons check this page out
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20030908004407.html (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20030908004407.html)
Its a mod for getting L2 cache of 256KB ! this turns it into a XP CPU ... Ive got a 1.0 ghz running at this right now
It seams stable so far ... day 1 , ill update this after a few more days of testing .
-
Now this is a good thread
I got a Asus A7N8X Deluxe off of eBay for $85
Just need to upgrade my GeForce2 Pro.

Whoops, just saw this.
Sound is good on the Deluxe version, although I'm not terribly picky about sound... I understand it's only average on the non-Deluxe version.
And you'll get 6 USB2 ports: 4 on the motherboard, and a plug for 2 more that you can mount to a PCI slot (mount included) or hook to front USB if you want (mount not included).

i built the system below recently for $1300. No monitor or keyboard or mouse tho.
It holds rock solid 70fps in AH (thats my refresh rate).
Although it did dip to 55fps earlier today, but i had my sound go out so I think it was related to that.
If you can avoid that fricken windows purchase, you may save a bundle. I paid $199.99 for a fresh install version of windows home.

WhiteHawk I notice that youre running the stock 350watt ps on that ... My 3gig machine died because of the 350 ps the first time i oced it ..(bsod) I went to the antec 430 .. then added a old 200 watt to run the fans and water pump .
on my other pc's running generic 350watt ps's I have to pick and chose carefully some of them hold steady voltages some of them dont.
I do have a 350 running my asus A7N8X Deluxe 2400+ amd ,GF4 440 , Oced to 2.2 ghz . its been stable so far ... but i dont think it will cut it if i had a high end video card in it ...
just a something to think about
-
yea..I am waiting for the opportunity to get a bigger ps. I just tried to OC to 233 FSB, but no boot. So I have it now OC'd from 200 to 210FSB. I havnt a fricken clue what i am doing, but I guess the only way to learn is to try eh? (Famous last words:lol )
Any advice for my system? Or is the first step a new PS?
I read at the abit forums of people OC'ing p4 2.4 to 3.5 on the same set up as I have, except a larger PS. And some prescription cooling, my temp is OK.
On the little bit that I OC'd, i picked up about 150pts on the Dr HArdware benchmark test. Sht, is a 420w PS the same across the board or is the antec's worth the $$$. I went overbudget on the puter, but got extra stuff and went with quality all the way.
Oh, by the way, there is some concern about the IC7-Max3 VDIMM, when the voltage is set to 2.9 or higher?? Its all greek to me, but I defantaley dont want to roast my puter.
-
The Antec supplies are definately worth it, in my opinion. The rail levels are really well thought out and the power is very clean and transient response time is about as fast as any supply will ever get.

For future reference, you could have saved bout $115 by buying the OEM version at the same time you bought your hardware. I bought the full OEM Home for $85 and full OEM Pro for $135. The big difference is that you don't get the manual (like anyone ever reads it anyway).

Yep,..MWave sells the OEM versions of W2K Pro and XP Pro for a lot less than the retail version. Who needs a manual anyway? Like they actually put any helpful information in the manual.

Ya..I figured i was Jumping the gun, I thought the $99 dollar one was the one for me, but that was just the upgrade. I was so excited my puter powered up without a 'fizzzzzzle popp' I couldnt wait to get XP loaded so I just bought it. It dont even have MS works in it:mad:

OK mwxx,
here you go.you can build this PC right here for about 1300. alittle more if you go with an i7 chip instead of the i5.
well worth the money and weight. all the bells and whistles to

Check out the AS ROCK web site. They have excellent motherboards. My gaming rig is an older AS ROCK. They have a new one that will boot windows in 2 seconds flat, no one else comes close. My next motherboard will be AS ROCK they are best bang for the buck.
