an odd thing to notice.....
« on: September 12, 2001, 10:38:00 AM »
but the skies are so quiet now...

I live a few minutes away from Dorval intl. in montreal and i'm used to hearing planes flying over all the time. and the place i work is directly under one of the flight paths to dorval. one thing i like doing during breaks is simply sitting outside smoking a cigarette and figuring out what type of plane just passed over me at about 700 feet( though the sound of a low flying jet will now give some people a moment of dread or terror  :( ) .

i just find it odd that i noticed the silence so much at a time like this...
maybe i'm just crazy.

Not at all.  I live and work in the flight path of a muni, near an international airport (Sea-Tac) and fairly close to Boeing Field, and the total lack of air activity yesterday and today is weird - not even a distant contrail.  Knowing WHY its so quiet is disturbing.  In a way, its a good symbol for how much the world has changed in a day.

Noticed same thing outside our office. Normaly you never here it directly but DFW noise is always there. Today it just feels strange outside do to the lower noise level.

Same thing near PDX.

I noticed several people commenting on the same thing in regards to the then evacuated lower island.  You are seeing the impact of no air traffic.. now imagine the impact of no traffic at all.

Eeerie... especially in an environment where it isn't the norm.

We have an airport here that serves Central Illinois and my workplace is below one of the flightpaths.  Nothing to see at all yesterday except 4 parallel contrails heading East.

I heard jets all day, not a cloud in the sky, but whenever I looked up to see them, I couldn't spot them(so much for my SA).  I was outdoors all day, and just figured the FAA had resumed airliner flights.  Turns out that what I was hearing was mostly F-16s and F-15s.
