Observer Position
« on: July 27, 2006, 10:20:39 PM »
Add a new position to vehicles and multi-crew aircraft called "observer" From this position, the HPS (Head position limits) would be opened up so that the entire interior (that was accessable by the crew) could be virtually toured, but none of the vehicle functions (flight controls, guns, etc.) can be operated.

For example, B17 - in the observer position, you would be able to move around, from the glass nose, up to the flight deck, look up through the observation bubble, crawl through the bomb bay, and move all around the aft section of the plane.

This may require some additional modelling of the interior spaces of vehicles, but a cool feature if it were made available.

Nobody had the 'instant' access to those positions you are asking for... For instance, to go from the nose of the B17 to the radio room took a few minutes... Are you willing to wait for that?

You had to snuggle under the flight deck, around the top turret gunner (via going right through his position), across the bomb bay on the cat walk, into the radio room...

If you want to move around in AH, you select the appropriate turret which represents a living soul in that position- not one man walking around.

Sorry, I kinda didn't address one of your complaints...

The 'whole' airplane isn't modeled... so in order to even let you 'walk' from one position to another would require the development of entire aircraft interiors which just do not exist currently.  Currently you only see certain parts of the plane, not the parts in between stations (such as the bomb bay catwalk or the area under the flight deck).

I think its a lot more work than you assume.

hey u guys ever play "call of duty 2" for ps2, there is a level that does let you walk through a b-24 from gun position to position,......but i dont think AH is ready to go into that type of detail just yet.

Hey Kurt, thanks for the hostile replies. Re-read my post and you will see that I'm not asking for anything 'instant'. I also mentioned that additional modelling would be required, as I am aware that several things are not modelled.

There is really no purpose to having a fetaure like this other than to let players virtually "walk around" inside the vehicle or aircraft they are in, just so they can see how the real thing was layed out, etc.

The way you reply, it's like I was asking for it to be able to gain some sort of game-play advantage.

touring around in a bomber is a waste of time. imho. to be able to see what a guy does during his drop or gunning, would be a good idea.

It's not a waste of time, it would just take too much work. Think about the skinners!!! They would now instead of having to edit a bitmap of the Cockpit, Exterior Skin, Pilots, And Interior Skin (limited to visibility). Go to editing skins of Pilots, Controls, Crawl-Paths, Gunners, Bomb-Bay, Cockpit, Exterior Skins, and much much more! And don't think people could just leave it as default, people will eventually want someone to re-model the entire aircraft, and pretty soon everyone wants their own personal skin for their bomber.

Wow, I feel bad for kev367th already!

My intent wasn't hostility and I really (even after a re-reading) didn't think I was at all hostle.  I was just saying that it seems a lot of work for no real benefit to the game.

An observer currently can occupy any position in the plane, drawing all the rest of the plane so that 1 guy in 500 can look at it seems a little wasteful in development and in processor time (frames)

I didnt think about the frame rate or the memory eaten up from it, thanks for bringing that to our attention.
