Scoring a "Kill"
« on: August 13, 2006, 10:28:05 PM »
Hello all, I want to first say thank you to EVERYONE that has been so very helpful in game!

I want to also preface this plea for help with my appologies, as I am certain this has been asked OR I should have the common sense enough to have figured this one out(

I have been playing since 11AUG06 , (so just a couple days) and in that time I have managed to score a kill or two... However; it doesnt "show" my kills, atleast that I know of.

I see LOTS of aces out there with a yellow line stating thier name and the type of plane they used and then finally the number of kills. But even if I do make it back to base, which almost never happens, I don't seem to see that.

As a side issue I am concerned with "stealing Kills" from Others...Is there an unwritten rule of when and when NOT to engage?

I truly believe, that when I have engaged an enemy , and a squad mate has been close , it was for the sole purpose of helping him...BUT I also want him to have the kill too.

This may seem trite but I can only imagine how infuriated someone would be having traked someone for miles and miles just to have a Noob like me to wonder by and take the preverbial glory . Haha

I realize that this is long winded and certainly, my appologies, BUT I would rather take your time here then to take it when you are knee deep in  @#^% out there.

Thank you all in advance !

To appear in the text buffer you need at least 2 kills.

Assists do not count towards that total  so you need to get #1 and #2 and then land on concrete on your base to land successfully.

To check your scores goto community/pilot score type your name in  and you get a detailed account of your kills and deaths  :)

The only thing about "stealing kills" that you might want to consider is that if you see a flaming wreckage with one wing tumbling to the ground, it would probably not be polite to shoot at it ;)

Well, ok, one more.  If possible, always try to shoot the bad guy on your buddy's six before shooting at the badguy on his 12 :D

Kill stealing. Can be a touchy subject sometimes, especially in the heat of a fight. If you kill the guy youre a kill stealer, if you dont why the "§$%§ didnt you help?

Generally, any target is game.

If I see someone engaged with a single opponent (1 vs 1) i usually ask on range (purple chan) if that person wants help. If i get a positive or no answer ill drop in.

If its in a multiple con enviroment, i usually dont choose the target that already has 5 green chasing him :). Waste of Alt and Time.

Basically: Use your common sense :).

Basically, if you see a plane that is disabled (no tail, wings, not in controlled flight) let it go.  It's best to save your ammo anyway.  Shooting something with one wing or no tail is really about the only way to 'steal' a kill.  If it's out of the fight, leave it be and move on.

If something is burning but still manovering and fighting then it is still a threat and a valid target.  Especially if someone leaves it expecting it to die.  Some planes will keep burning for a while, letting their pilot continue the fight.  If someone leaves a burning plane it's still fair game and they shouldn't get pissed.  It's bad to get in the habit of ignoring these, as one will eventually bite back on you!

If someone is already on a plane, give them help!  It's a team effort and if they havn't got it yet they should have gotten it sooner.  Better to focus fire and put something out of action fast than to all chase individual targets.

---->Just keep in mind:  Try not to get in the way of their shot.  Especially if they don't know you're there!  Also watch your fire if you're behind your friend.  In the main arena you will damage yourself by shooting friendlies, and shooting yourself down because someone cut in front of your beautiful shot is one of the crappiest things that can happen in the game.  Also, in the special events arena friendly fire is mostly lethal to the other guy, so watch the guns on takeoff and whenevery you're close to other friendlies.

Well, this is certainly one way to look at it... ;)

Anyway, Sektion, as time progresses your situational awareness (SA) will start to develop more, and you'll be able to tell which bandits are the greater threat.

Generally speaking if there's already already three guys on a guy, being the fourth is pointless overkill, and a good way to get yourself killed by one of those individual targets.  It also won't make you many admirers or friends from the other countries :D

One addition to the burning plane comments.

If it's a fighter, then go ahead and kill it for the reasons stated. If it's a bomber, and not approaching a freindly base, I would leave it alone. Target one of the other planes in the formation. If it is getting ready to drop on your base, take it out.

heres a rule of thumb I use but to each their own

If I see a friendly chasing someone I take up a wingman position but let them press the attack.  If I see two people (or more) chasing someone I stay above or away from it and watch for enemies that they might not see.

If it's a massive engagement with nearly even odds I pick someone to kill me and chase them until they notice me :D

oh and if its Schatzi or any of the other known assassins I just try to watch and learn :aok

Since you mention that, I'm interested in advice or opinions about this situation:

The other day, I was fighting an Fw190 in a P51D. No other bandits were nearby so there wasn't any real hurry, and I was low on ammo so I needed to make every shot count. The Fw190 driver was also pretty good, and made me work very hard for a shot. The fight lasted longer than it might have if I had ammo to spare, but I kept taking short bursts and eventually took out his engine. But the fight wasn't over...

I was down to the two 0.5s with just under 200 rounds left... and he was still making me work for it... eventually I was sat on his tail at 200 yards and I was taking my time to line up to finish him off with my last 150 rounds or so, but what the hey, I was in no hurry...

Meanwhile, I checked and was certain there were no other enemies in sight. You just know if you are going to get killed due to target fixation, it is always just before you get that kill shot, but I was clear and the  kill was almost certain... I say almost, because at that point a friendly pilot overtook me from a dive and stole the kill with a single burst...

Normally I never complain about a stolen kill, particularly if the other guy has been competing for it with me, and he was just quicker to the kill than I was, but I thought this was very different.

True... I know I shouldn't play with my food, but that steal was so blatant I probably over reacted to it... Not only did I tell him what I thought in no uncertain terms, but I immediately defected and shot him down before he could land it. Even worse, it was a squaddie

Would that have got anyone else fired up enough to do what I did?  Was it right, wrong, or... well you tell me?

Well, i dont think id have switched sides (at least not to chase him/her down). But i did say something after a similar situation Sunday night.

I had fought a Spit16 down from about 6-7K (me in HMk1). He tried to dive away but i had anough E so he couldnt run (or rather he thought he couldnt). Any ways... after a few turns and loops i had pinged him up good already, no big parts missing yet though. I was practically sitting on top of the Spit diving on him at about d50. He was snapping around, i thought hed hit the woods in a sec (plenty of trees around to help my poor gunnery). If not, hed have been in my sights shortly after. Suddenly the Spit blows (tree?) and i get the.... ASSIST???????  A split second later the friendly that had "helped" me came out in front of me. I dared to ask on range if "that was really neccessary" and got a lengthy answer on how that Spit was a danger to the 10 Knits taking off and that i had looked like i was in dire need of help etc etc etc.....

Those things can annoy me to NO end. I rarely take any action in game though. Only Schutt gets the brunt of a mad gf prawling the appartment muttering about ""!%§&§$%/%$/(".

But seen in the light of day: Any target in the MA is a free one. Technically noone can claim dibs on a kill untill the guy hit the ground or blew up. Id just wish for more curtesy sometimes.

I can't fault you and if I had been the other guy I would have been embarassed and apologized for it.   I haven't been in a similar situation but I wound up ramming a 190 one night during the last frame, totally my fault, and seriously considered asking HT if they could delete the kill from my score and his.  Not that I expect everybody else to have my mindset in the game which is why I rarely get annoyed at anybody but myself.
