Actually Denholm, it's quite the opposite.

In picture taking, as well as real life,
Closer things are sharper, have more "color" and more "contrast"
Farther things are blurrier, have LESS color, and LESS contrast.

Basically it makes things closer look brighter and darker at the same time, and the background looks "washed out"

That's pretty much what I was saying. It's just hard for someone who doesn't work around doing this to describe it. I was just telling him what I saw from a viewer's perspective, not from a creator's perspective.

I don't wish to be picky, it's great work you have there Biggles but I do question the flames on the P47. That engine had a large turbocharger that was of course run by the exhaust. I don't think you would see exhaust flames like you would with a supercharged engine or a normaly aspirated one. I may be wrong on that though. You might want to check.
