What model are you trying to program Rep0?  You might want to look for satellite laptops on ebay.  About $20-$50 usually.

:lol

Kermit, I bought a Motorola System Saber III. It dates about 1994-1996. They are wonderful radios for our VHF system at the Police Department. I work in a small town and need all the surrounding towns, the county SO, the surrounding fire departments, the Indian tribe's police and a county talk around station, all VHF, programmed in. I thought it would be more fun to do it myself since the Moto dealer wants a little more cash than I think it's worth.

The software is finicky. It MUST be run in DOS, not a Windows DOS prompt window. For this specific radio, the optimal programming machine is a late model 286 or an early model 386. DOS only. I'm in the gathering phase. I should have the radio tomorrow or Saturday. I have the software. I need a computer, a RIB and a cable to connect the radio to the RIB. The RIB acts as a translator between the binary code talkin' software and the language the radio understands, whatever that is.

I'm surprised theres not more HAM nerds here chiming in.

:aok
Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

Win95 or Win98 would work.  Just chose "shut down and restart in MS-DOS mode"

install the software that comes on a disk.  It creates a batch file for you so allyou have to type at the prompt after installtion is, "saber".

Doing this from memory.  If you need exact answers, just let me know.

If it's all conventional, you'll do fine.  If it's trunking system, you'll need a local man's help.  Sabers are no longer supported as you probably already know.

Have fun Rep0.

I think he means 1992.  Original PC's might have been out in 82 with the 8086 processors.  The 80286 AT machines came out in '84.  It had a 6mhz CPU, 512k of memory, could handle EGA graphics at 640x350 in 64 colors, and supported 1.2 meg 5 1/4 in. floppy drives and 20 meg HDs.  First one to run DOS 3.0  1986 you could get the second model running at 8mhz and had better support for HDs and handled more memory, up to 3 megs!  I had one we bought new in 87.

Ah the good old days of extended and expanded memory.

I don't think there were 286's in 1982. I remember that was when things like the Timex-Sinlcair Zx-81 and the Adam were out.
Wikipedia says they were introduced in 1982, but I wonder how many people had them? The first commercial for an IBM/Intel machine I remember seeing was with a Charlie Chaplin character.
