Just a FYI:  Black squares instead of icons are normally video card driver related. Often updating the driver resolves the issue.

Ace, you could check the manufactures sitefor your video card, but in your case you may just be running out of resources. Your laptop isn't up to running 3d games well. Be sure your machines has the least anount of processes you can get by on, and that you are running the game with all the eye candy turned off.
