Ok, can you guys see any problems with going from win98 to win2k? My friend sancho has given me some advice too. I just have been at the creatiuve labs support site to DL a win2k driver for my sound blaster live, and it gave me a message that it will not work with 5.1 version cards. uh oh, i am thinking that my Sound card will not work with win2k :( anyone confirm it?   this has been the only thing I have researched so far. I hope my vid card will work with win2k, as also the rest of my components. What do you think?

experts speak up please :)

Keep Win98 and use the money to update your cpu/mobo/memory.

eeeek ammo, i am not well versed on 2k yet.  All i can suggest is you visit each component manuafacturer's website and see what they have to say.

Don't know how good 2k is for gaming, guess it depends on what you do with your PC, if all you do is play AH, i'd stick with 98...

My thots..

Ammo, I recommend that you do a clean install of Win2k on a separate partition so you can dual boot. That way, you can take your time getting the Win2k installation/drivers and all that up to speed.

Just make sure you use the FAT 32 file system on both OS's.

I should add that the Win2k Setup will scan your machine and tell you what you need to update, and what will be incompatible - before you get to the actual installation of files....  So you can get started now  :)

I keep Win98SE on its own partition just for AH, for the little bit better performance.

Gunthr - why FAT32? I run Win98SE/W2K setup and FAT32 is only on Win98 partition...

SB Live! here - no sweat under W2K Not sure how different 5.1 is though...

Lynx, I run FAT32 on both so that I can move files back and forth between OS's... its more convenient  :)

I kept W98 on the side of w2k, but after a couple months I decided to delete it..

I haven't missed it.

Just make sure you get all the available updates + sp2 from microsoft.

W2k has worked really great for me, and my computer is already 2 years old.

SB live, MS PP, Geforce256, Abit BH6, IBM hd.. all work with no probs whatsoever.

At first I had some minor trouble with drivers.. But now situation has evolved a lot and I can't say I have a bad thing to say about w2k.

Edit: Ok, except the long boot-up time.. Then again, you don't need to boot that often using w2k.

Ammo, have you found out if your CH gear will work with Win2k?  I haven't seen any Win2k drivers for your stuff on CH's site.  I think that is the only possible roadblock to your upgrade.

good question and I know you asked earlier. I dont know for sure but right now in win98 my gear is listed as a  "3 axis" joystick, rather than a "CH Combat stick". I am assuming (always a bad idea) that i will do the same thing in win2k. I need to ask within this forum if these win2k users are using CH stuff and any anomolies with it.

Hi Ammo,
I was reading some of your other posts and it looks like you may lack some of the basic knowledge necessary to start building and or tearing apart your current pc.  The stuffs easy as hell to learn, just hit the base library or amazon.com and pick up the latest book on building a pc.  It'll really help to fill in some of the basic info your gonna need to keep you from pulling ur hair out while trying to figure out why it won't work, and bein' a weapons guy I figure we'd all be alot safer if you stayed calm and unfrazzled  :)

LOL so true crash ;)

I got a clean install of Win2K, yippee!!

But heres the first problem, win2K didnt recognize my vid card as a geforce2 MX. Device manager says I have a video controller (VGA compatable). Max is 16 colors, 800x600. I have the drivers available, but under the adapter tab, it doesnt give me the button to update my driver. I gotta go get some rogaine to replace my hair.

I just had to do this in NT ammo.  I think.. go to display properties, adapter, change, select from list, then say Have Disk, and point it to your new driver files
