VR920
« on: January 12, 2009, 11:12:45 AM »
Finally getting around to my thoughts on the VR920.

Had alot of problems getting it to work, probably because I bought a used unit from e-bay rather than buying new.

I ended up sending it to Vuzix for non-warranty repair.
They sent it back and accidentally did not charge me for the repair.

Wanting to keep on good terms with the company, I called them to pay for the repair and they actually gave me a 50% "honesty discount," so I would have to say I am impressed with the customer service, I thought that was pretty cool.

The unit isn't bad, AH2 is supported and the native head tracking works pretty well although I've never used TrackIR or anything else so I have nothing to compare it to.

You really need the optional immersion shield unless you can play in a pitch black room.

Other features it could use is a way to individually focus each eye like binoculars.

Also it would be cool if you could flip the unit up to see your keyboard when necessary etc.

The 3d stereoscopy didn't impress me much, I guess it's kind of cool but just not very "eye popping" to me.

You can supposedly wear these over eyeglasses, I don't wear them but I frankly don't see how. The unit needs to sit in a particular place in relation to your eyes to focus best, and it seems like glasses would throw that off, but I don't know for sure.

The resolution for me doesn't really cut it. I have one eye a little weaker than the other and it seems really hard to see text and other detail and the color is not very vibrant compared to an LCD monitor.

Some of that can be mitigated with zoom.

I set it clone monitor mode so that when I needed a clearer view (looking at maps etc) I could lift them up and look at the monitor, that doesn't work however, because the monitor image is shaky and unreadable. I assume this is because it imparts the stereoscopic 3d to both monitors, I'm investigating whether this can be changed but don't know yet.

Also I would like to be able to disable the native head tracking so the unit could be used with TrackIR. I think this is probably possible but haven't figured that out yet.

I know this can be done by using the unit without the Vuzix software but then you have no 3d effect.

I've only just gotten back to messing with this thing, so I might learn some ways to make it better but so far I find it kinda cool but not really very playable.

Some of that might be due to my less than perfect vision.

Vuzix is coming out with a new model called the VR1440. It will apparently have 600X800 resolution like the emagin Z800 instead of the 480X640 the VR920 has, all of them automatically scale down higher res input.

It will probably have other improvements as well and might be worth waiting for but who knows how long it will be before this is available?

I'd be interested to hear what other VR920 AH2 users have to say. Some might have better experiences than me.

Cheers.

Thanks for the input. I am still weary about it though and will probably never buy one. I'm simply uncomfortable with my eyes right next to the screen.

The proximity of eyes to screen doesn't really cause any discomfort, you can't really tell, but I guess if you're worried about it exploding or something.....lol

These really interest me, but I don't think the technology is there just yet.

One area I would like to see improved would be head tracking. I would like to see 1 to 1 head tracking. I think that would add another level of immersion, as would higher resolutions.

I'm also concerned with being able to use them with glasses they look like the sit close to the face. I have problems with safety glasses that are suppose to fit over glasses at work so I would hate to fork out the cash and find out I can't use them.

When it comes to technology, yes I think we are here, and I wish there was a better way to see the glasses in action.. so I have an idea...since it's difficult to youtube or fraps the IR capability and see what the pilot is actually doing... do  a slpit display on the same screen using a regular monitor and the pilot using the glasses.  set up a camera to view both the pilot and the regular monitor "that shows what the pilot sees" so we can see the screen movement in correlation to head movement.    the main thing I can tell by these glasses is in track Ir your turning your head away from the monitor when looking around even though the movements are amplified, your still turning away. were as the glasses keep the monitor RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.
also wearing the glasses with give you a sense of actually being in the aircraft because no matter where you look your IN "so to speak" the game.

I WOULD LOVE TO TRY OR TEST THESE GLASSES, OMG DOING BARREL ROLLS WITH CONS MUST BE F%^&^& FANTASTIC!  :airplane:    :rock  :aok

all I would really like to see is these glasses tested out by AHers before there cast aside. some of these guys could be missing out on an awesome new SIM capability just because haters don't like the price tag or don't like change or even the idea of someone else having a competitive edge.  btw they cant make you fly better,  but your situational awareness should improve dramasticly after you get used to the movement.

Wow, that's quite a bump.

I had intended on trying these out again, but I had left them out at my home away from mobile home out in the desert and some sort of rodent got in and chewed through the cord.

I suppose I could send them in for repair and I might at some point.

One thing I did learn is that you can disable both the tracking and stereoscopy with a couple of keystrokes.

I really wish they would come through with the higher res model they were talking about.

well like I was saying, if people find these useful they will make improvements on them, I will defiantly be testing or trying these out when I find them...
