Oh my! Shuffler, being sort of a luddite (or rather, slow adapter) I couldn't even imagine such situations!
Agreed, I went for battery operated watches already in the late 70's when my previous watch broke. And as a dynamic sales rep I got a fixed car phone in the late 80's to help my customers and bosses reach me during working hours. However, neither of those was a novelty any more, nothing for the neighbours to be envious about.
Speaking about envy, a few years ago I lost a customer because I was driving a Mercedes and she, as a wealthy inheritor running a social service project, had a Toyota. It made no difference that my E-class wagon was from '95, a 20 years old W124, and the market value might have been lower than that of her car. The big newly washed MB made me a filthy rich bastard in her eyes, living a luxury life with the money I charged her for my services.
