Linksys Wireless Hub/Router & Aces High
« on: January 20, 2003, 11:25:48 AM »
I'm about to have cable internet hooked up again.  Landlord is kinda grimacing about having another jack plugged into another bedroom.  I wouldn't mind going wireless...but, how does this work on games like Aces High for latency, etc?

Small apartment...I know others have these, just wondering if there are anythings I should consider before making the leap?  I was checking out the Linksys models.

Appreciate your suggestions and comments

Paul

Linksys=POO, go for netgear, as far as latency goes, dont worry about it, this will not be a problem.

I don't have any experience with the consumer wireless equipment LePaul or would be glad to help out.

Thanks, Skuzzy.

I'd love to go wireless...one less cable the cats can gnaw on!

LePaul, I set up a Linksys wireless network for my wife's system and my XBox. I notice no latency at all while gaming with it. I tried AH and Raven Shield and noticed no difference from my direct connection to my DSL. It was very easy to hookup and the cost wasn't too bad. Let me know if you have any questions.

For some reason, my cat has never bothered my cables.

I have never figured that one out.

The only wireless stuff I have worked with started at $55,000.00 U.S.  I figure that is a bit overkill for your application.  :D

LePaul - I recently set-up a Linksys cable router, but it's the good old cable variety. Gaming wise it works great. My brother and I both play AH simultaneously and everything works fine - flat-lining net stat etc. Other games are unchanged too.

The only problem I'm having is stuttering web browsing - intermittant loading of web pages - it's a real pain in the ass. Haven't solved it yet. It's like being on a crappy 56k set-up.

But strangely, for games and downloading files, it works beautifully - we can even download from kazaa simultaneously.

Dowding, you might want to read my updated post in the Technical Forum about file sharing utilites.  It might answer your query.

Wow skuzzy! I didn't realise that even when the program is completely turned off on your system, people still hammer you for a connection! I thought that as soon as you disable it, you disappear from the network entirely.

I get the slow loading of webpages even if Kazaa hasn't been running, for days. I think I'll have to do some digging and find out if there is a solution (apart from disconnecting the router ;)).

Thanks for the info, anyways. :)

I was checking BestBuy.Com out and they have a DLink wireless router/switch for $129 with a $30 rebate.  It seems to offer faster speeds than the competitors based on some "improved silicon chip"   Wow, talk about dumbing stuff down for the masses.

I've had good luck with DLink stuff but was pondering going Linksys since many of my friends have the same device (so debugging/setting up would be a cinch).

Any "nays" on a DLink?

For a $30 rebate...and faster speed...it seems to be a decent choice

If you run, say Kazaa, for about 24 hours, it will take about 3 days for your Internet connection to get back to normal after Kazaa is shut off.

I'll try to get some graphs of this up in the Internet forum next week.

I got a linksys wireless hub about a year ago to try it out on my laptop.

I didn't like it that much. I couldn't get any reception upstairs when the hub was in the basement. Even if I moved the hub upstairs I would only get a few hundred k for speeds.

That might not've been that bad, but I really like my 100mbit wired network.

Skuzzy, I'd love to see that data and have it for ammo with regards to our bandwidth and it's use/abuse.

LePaul I set my parents up with the Linksys Wireless Router/Switch and it works very well.  You can DMZ a computer for gaming, which eliminates any and all firewall issues.

One advice:  Don't get the PCI card Network Adapter.  Get the Wireless Internet Bridge (WET11).  The reason is that the antenna on the PCI cards (e.g. WMP11) can be blocked by the PC case, causing lousy connections.  With the WET11 you just plug it into your existing wired NIC, and you are free to put the antenna wherever you want for best reception.

Also with the WET11 you can set up a whole wired network in your room, connect the WET11 to a switch on that network, and the whole wired network will become part of the wireless network which is connected to your router.  Which is great if you have multiple PC's or a network printer, etc.
