AZZA 366 motherboard & Video card spec help.
« on: November 14, 2003, 04:28:32 PM »
azza's website blows and i can't find any info around about what the max CPU the board could handle. Currenlty running an XP 1800+ (266 fsb, i think). I would imagine i could run a 2400+ ??

also, this might be more for the Skuzzmeister:

What would be the best option as far as video card goes if i were to keep the 1800+ ? (as in, what card won't starve from the CPU) I'm trying not to break the bank, yet would like to get something powerful. Currently have a GF2 ULTRA 64 meg.

thanks for any help.

An 1800+ isn't too bad of a CPU.  A GeForce 4 Titanium 4200 or Radeon 9600 Pro should have all the CPU power they need with it.

As for the CPU support, the highest end 266 MHz FSB Athlon XP is the 2400+.  The real question is whether or not your board can support "Throughbred" core Athlons, versus the older "Palomino" core.  The Palomino was available up the 2100+ level, but since then all Athlon XPs from the 2400+ down have transistioned to Tbreds.  If your board can support Throughbreds, it will be able to take a 2400+, if not, a 2100+ Palomino would be the limit.  (A 2100+ Palomino would be tough to find now, you'd have to do some checking to find one.)

thanks bloom.

also, what's the main differences between the palamino and t-breds? what would the MB possibly not handle if i were to try the T-bred?

rosco, i've had no troubles with my Azza as of yet and i've had it for long while (year or two). It was cheap, but has served me well. If the budget allows, i'll eventually do the full MB yadda yadda, but for now, i'm ok.

The Throughbred requires a lower voltage than the Palomino.  If the board does not support the correct voltage you could kill the CPU, or at the very least it would run very hot if the voltage was set too high.  About all I could find on that board was the manual, which unfortunately is not very good.  The voltage range listed does go low enough for a Tbred, but the bios itself may not recognize the VID settings for a Tbred and may not get the voltage correct.
