Nightime flying?
« on: November 11, 2003, 12:03:07 PM »
Here's something I didn't see in manual - where are the headlights?

Seriously, I logged on to main and what  I thought was the sun rising was the moon rising. Pretty soon I couldn't see anything.
Do people do a lot of flying at night? Any tips on that? I was going to try to land but couldn't see the runways.

I think people tend to turn up the brightness on their monitors to give them some sort of vision at night.  Luckily, night lasts a very short time in the AH cycle in the MA.  Other than that, try and use your instruments a bit.

Nite time is great for a long distance buff run or a squad jabo mission deep in nme territory (bring a goon or 2 )
Its also fun to get alt up over an nme base and wait til they take off at sunrise ..

I hardly ever fly at night. All the dweebs turn up the Gamma on  their Video Cards so it's just  like flying in the daylight.

If you don't cheat, you don't have a chance.

I just go pop an adult beverage and wait till it's day again...

Turning up gamma doesn't do anything to help you see a dark plane against a black background.  The problem with visibility at night is not the lack of brightness, it's the lack of colour contrast to help you differentiate objects.  Turning up gamma is more or less pointless.

The F4U-1D has a plate glass gunsight that helps with nightvision.  As a bonus, as Ecliptik pointed out, gamma won't help see a dark object against a dark background, and the F4U-1D can be very dark at night.

Since the F4U-1D is a pretty good ground-attack plane, you can use the map to guide you to an enemy target, then use the gunsight to help you pinpoint your drop.

Of course, this only works if you're a Rook.  Otherwise, if you're a Knight or a Bish, you'll either (a) crash upon launching from the carrier deck or (b) auger into the ground.
