When they got in trouble, and radioed for help, they refused the rescue offer of the local government and said they'd wait for a british military rescue.
There were perhaps good diplomatic ways of doing it, but saying, "no we don't want your rescue team; we'll wait for our foreign military to pull us out" is an insult. And it made international news. So, if they are tourists, why do they insist on a foreign military operation to get them out?
