This would most likely require going into the unstable area by foot and setting up instruments, putting the crew at risk. It's easier, and safer to just use a cannon. (When I think about it, more effective too.)

Still....very dangerous for the occaisional wild round...Maybe keep people off the mountains during times of the year when avalanches are a threat? I dunno...hate to piss off all those rich people that wouldn't be allowed to ski.

Maybe they could install large subwoofers in sealed cabinets into the mountains sides during the summer, and then in the winter when there is a risk of an avalanche, play some Metallica through them?

You know, I could do the same job with a small RC plane, a small 1000 watt subwoofer scotch-taped to a cd player and drop the thing via remote.

As the thing falls down it begins playing the barbara streissand CD at full volume.

That will get rid of ANY snow.

Total cost: Cheaper than the 105mm shell I bet... and a ton more fun.

The PETA might sue though.

i thought the 105 howitzer used a shelled round and the 155 used the baged powder.

also, i thought they used the 105 recoiless rifle (lighter, slimpler,cheaper)for avalanche controll.

i went to a military school for high school and there was an old legend of someone putting a cueball in with the blank that was fired at revely and taps ...
it was said that it shot clear over the lake
and put a hole through a house.

of course, that was legend. there was another one that said that one class dismantled the howitzer and reassembled it on top of the 4 story barracks building.

who knows with such tales, but i was reminded of it...

i used to love getting to fire that thing when i pulled main guard duty.

smelled like...victory.

In a perfect world, perhaps. Unfortunately this isn't a perfect world and people, including highly trained Military people, make mistakes.

No one and noting is incapable of error or malfunction. The howitzer is the best tool available at this time.
