when the time comes for me to go to ballot box during the primary and I'm looking at a list of names to pick from I dont think I am going to vote for someone because "it will be interesting" might as well not vote at all... Ahhh, gotcha. In that case, my motives are pretty much summed up as "it might be our last/best chance..."

yeah, I'd tend to agree with you.
So it would be his last chance to have influence from such a high position, which is better to cope with in tandem with someone like Thompson than sitting in his office pondering what could have been.
True, it would offer some influence. It would be an obvious ploy to retain the libertarian/independent vote, but such a ploy very well might work. However, imho it's highly doubtful that RP would ever be offered the VP nomination. He's too much of a maverick for them. Also, I think Thompson might not be comfortable being one "accident" away from RP taking the reins, considering the perception of some of RP's supporters as being "fringe"
