Help me Obi Wan Kenobi...
« on: November 27, 2011, 06:39:40 PM »
I am far from home with one broken back up disk and another that has suddenly decided to fail.

are there any wizzes out there that can help me to rebuild my directory structure?  i just don't have the cash to go out and get another drive to copy it off to and i have a huge deadline.

most appreciative if there is anyone out there who can walk me through it.

currently using "test disk" to try to recover but it's just gibberish to me.

help me obi wan.  you're my only hope.

Sorry JB, just got up (late night gig last night). Not sure I'm understanding what your issue is - a bad partition or something?

If its a bad partition, try this

http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/

Make a bootable cd of it first.

If its your disk going (or suspected of going bad) open up a command prompt (start, run, cmd) or programs, accessories, right click cmd.exe, run as admin if win7

type chkdsk /f (it should prompt you to restart your computer to allow it to run - if not, restart your computer - the /f is the bit that tells check disk to fix it.

hey dichotomy, long time no see.  :)

no worries wurzel.

it's an external drive.  and it won't let me run chkdsk for some reason...

i am currently on 5 of letting testdisk run through and try to find the partition, which i have come to understand has become corrupted.

makes sense, since it's mine.

alas.  on 90 percent now.  just hours to go.

Ah righty, try running that partition recovery stuff on it JB, might help (and might be faster than test disk). If its corrupted, there are 2 versions on that site, one will recover the partition, one will (hopefully) recover the data you need.
