Axis Heavy Bomber
« on: January 26, 2013, 10:00:18 PM »
I was thinking the JU-188, HE-177, P.108, or Z.1007
Give us something different other than the usual B-17/B-24/Lancaster

Ju188 and Z.1007 aren't really heavies though.

Remember the concept of "heavy" bomber was a bit different for the Axis powers. They really didn't need them (or rather heavy bombers didn't fit in to their strategy), and when they (mainly the Germans) did get their hands dirty in heavy bombers they were not all that successful for a multitude of reasons.

I think the Axis would be far better served to add in the He111.   :aok  Not only is it the biggest hole in Germany's planet set list, it is the most glaring and obvious "huh, what do you mean we don't have it?" in AH's planet set.   :aok

In general, the Japanese have there 3 most important bombers in terms of production numbers and impact (G4M Betty, Ki-67 Peggy, and B5N Kate), and the Germans have 2 of their 3 biggest players (Ju88, Ju87G), but really could use the He111.  It wouldn't be a hanger queen any more than the B26 or B25.  The Italians... well their P.108 performed well and had great potential but only 25 of them were built and they really didnt accomplish much or had an impact on anything.

The He111 is the most glaring hole but the Ju-188 saw effective use at Stalingrad in 1942-43 after the commanders in theater finally started using them properly. Prior to that they were slaughtered as unescorted transports. Reference Stalingrad by Antony Beevor. Great book.
Easy in-game again.

This here is why I don't think the He177 should be added.  It was a complete disaster in actual service and people think it would be, by far, the best heavy bomber in AH after the B-29.

Most of the problems for the HE-177 were the engines were unreliable, but when used in a slight dive to get to top speed they were almost unstopable

It's a fallacy that the axis even NEEDS a "heavy bomber" -- it wasn't part of the axis bomber fleets in WW2. German, Italian, and Japanese bombers, even the big ones that went long ranges, weren't "heavy" bombers. They focused on smaller bombloads. They focused on smaller bombs. It's just what they did. They didn't fly B-17 or Lancaster equivelants.

So if you want to fly a B-17 or Lanc in this game, DO IT! Don't go asking for a mythological axis equivelant. They really didn't exist.

P.S. Bring on the He111 and Ju188!!

I for one would love to fly the P.108B or the HE-177A5.
