I wouldn't have clicked on it had it not been for this thread.  As a fan of the Mongols (they were terrible, awful and horrific to be sure) I'm in the middle of a binge and 5 episodes in.

If you have the time for a podcast or two it's worth checking out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History Wrath of the Khans http://www.dancarlin.com/hardcore-history-series/

They'll shine some light on how what you see on the series is toned waaaaay down.  The rest of them are quite good as well (episode 40 and up) with Blueprint for Armageddom being my current road trip accompaniment as I await the next in the series.  They're free for download or on your iPad/iPod/iPhone podcast app.

It is sad, but I should say that I got lost a lot in the historical references.  My wife, who had taken a couple of general survey courses on Asia in college (30+ years ago) did much better than I and thinks that the history was accurate expect for possibly Marco Polo!  Seems that most serous scholars wonder if in fact he ever went to China.  (So it looks as if there was a Marco Polo, but not one in China).

We tried to watch it, but had to give up.  Seems it was shot at midnight, outside, under cloudy skies using a candle to light the scenes.  There were simply too many times we asked each other, "Can you see what is going on?"  We finally gave up.

Seems like it would have been a good one too, from what we could see.
