I do see a couple of the points from the other side of the discussion, but IMO an option to put your account into a "sleep" mode at AH wouldn't be a bad option, with say a very small fee if that would satisfy those not in favor of HTC maintaining customer game character information for "nothing".
It could also be a rewards system, for example so many years of subscription gives so many months of free suspended account time, or some variation to that sort of thing. ANYTHING other than just boom, eliminating the achievements and points earned, as well as often the player's name, if said player for whatever reason decides to temporarily take a break and suspend paying for his account.
IMO the cost of HTC retaining this information would be greatly offset by the hook of letting players keep their AH personae intact, which as stated, like other MMO games, be a benefit and attraction for players to return at some point to become paying customers once more.
