Salvador Allende, president of Chile.
Democratically elected, became target of US covert operations including sabotage, kidnapping and asassination.
Finally, in September 11th 1973, Augusto Pinochet rose up in a coup funded by the US in arms and training. Allende's last words announced to the public was:
"I address to all who now will face oppression, that I will not give up. For the people I will give my life, but I will always be with you. I believe in the fate of our country, and the fate of our people. I also believe the people will one day triumph, and the roads will be open once more, people shall walk free, and will make a better future.
For Chile! For the people! For the workers! These are my final words. I believe you will over come my sacrifice, and soon, the all the people who love freedom will open up a better society. They may think they can rule us with brute force, but we know violence and criminal act can never ultimately stop our paths. History is on our side, it is the will of the people. Someday we shall walk free, and open up a better future with our own hands."
September 11th, 10:40 PM, Allende refuses to surrender, orders the presidential body guards to leave the post and escape. He faces the rebels alone armed with only a rifle.
...
Now that's what I call a real 'president - the elected leader of the people'.
