Intel leak?
« on: November 23, 2002, 10:22:11 PM »
all,
I have a concern which I encountered last night as I got ready for the friday TOD. I'm hoping this is just a misunderstanding on my part, but I do think it needs to be addressed.
I entered the TOD an hour early in order to disband my Midway squad so as to join my "normal" squad. As I did so, one of the CM's of the TOD event was giving out the allies targets, which we were to be hitting, over open channel.
Is this common practice? Do the CM's of opposing sides know the targets of each, and do they inform thier respective sides of those? If this is the case, is it to ensure everyone sees action during the event or was this a flagrant violation of CM authority?

The axis knew your target areas.  No worries; we knew where you were comming from and where you were going, but not the routes.  Pretty standard stuff.

When I started the TOD’s over a year ago I quickly realized one of the inherent problems with large events is the lack of action some squads may encounter. To avoid this problem (90% of the time) the Admin CM’s send out a list of 3 or 4 targets that must be attacked and 3 or 4 targets that must be defended. When the frame C.O.’s do it write and all the squads show up everyone should see action.

What has and does happen now and again is a squad might not show up at all so if they were slotted to defend a target the attacking squad might find a milk run. Boring to say the least. Or maybe a no show squad was to attack a target, then you have defenders patrolling a field and no one shows up to attack. :(

Both sides of the TOD’s know what will be attacked, and what is to be defended. How many will show up, what AC the enemy will be flying, routes taken, when, altitude and a few other variables still make it quite exciting. :)

A CM giving out targets on channel 1 is not a problem. :) All it shows is for some reason a squad did not get their info prior to the frame. Who knows why.

Ok, thanks for the info. I understand the reasoning behind it. :)
I was FL of VB8 in Midway and we didn't see any action during the last frame - 3 hours of flying without seeing any action does get to be boring :p

Nomde,

Usually as a setup CM I do get the setup information and target information for both sides. Meaning I know what the allies have been tasked with hitting and what the axis have been tasked with hitting. Just as both sides CiCs know each others rough objectives.

I do not know specific orders, assignments, etc. for the side that my squad is not on.

What happened on friday night was that an allied squad did not recieve their orders via email. So their C.O. came in and did not even know what they were assigned or what the strategic situation was. He asked me to fill him in which I did on country channel 1 because it was easier than tuning a private channel while I was doing other setup things.

The information I gave out was the intel information that the Axis side had about the allied targets. The information on plane types both sides already had so no "special knowledge" was given out.

Fortunately APdrone (C.O. of AirMAgeddon) saw what was going on channel and told me he would take over the briefing since he was an allied squad and knew what their specific orders would be. Allowing their squad to actually do what they were suppose to instead of improvising from the basic setup information on what plane type, load out and mission they should do.

It also freed me up to deal with an Axis squad that never got their orders.

So to answer your question .. yes the setup CM knows the objectives, rules, and special rules for each side. The setup CM does not know each sides specific battle plan and plane assignments.

Each sides CO knows the objectives of the others and the rules. In most cases they also know the special rules that affects the others. In some past TODs though they have been unaware of some very specific rules that apply for the other side because that is what the ADMIN CM wanted. This has only happened once when I was a setup CM.

Now as to whether this was a flagrant violation of CM authority. No it was not since I was giving out information that each side already knew. And I was not telling them on open channel what plane to fly and what to hit but instead was telling them their options that they could then choose from if they did not find out what they were suppose to do before the TOD started.

Basically I was trying to be helpful and to provide them with the little information that I had since they did not get any from the Allied CiC via email.

This breakdown of email is starting to be a problem. For the past several TODs that I have done the setup for at least one if not more squads have come into the arena and asked me if I know what their orders are or at least objectives since they did not get any email about it. This is exactly why I started a thread asking for each squads main contact and secondary contact. So that I could make sure that everyone was getting the "rules reminders" and try to make sure that everyone was getting good email addresses to send orders too.
