Nice to see the courts take a stand on after-the-play violence in youth sports.  The victim was elbowed in the mouth.

ATHENS, Ohio -- A high school soccer player was sentenced Friday after pleading no contest to an assault charge.

Daniel Malloy, 18, of Albany, received two days in jail, a $1,000 fine and a year of probation.

Athens County Prosecutor David Warren said Malloy assaulted T.J. Helbling during a break in play in the Albany Alexander-Coshocton Division III regional tournament game Oct. 25 in Athens. Helbling had oral surgery to repair damaged teeth.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association said it was not aware of any other high school students being criminally charged because of actions on the field of play.

Interesting question, but it was after the play so I'd call it legally wrong.  What if it was during play though?
Could a hockey player sue another one for a fight that happened on the ice, during play?  I don't really see why not.

I know I've thrown my share of cheap elbows in sports, some of which caused results that I sincerely regretted.  Scary to think I could have been held legally accountable.
