It seemed cheesy because the FOX tv execs couldn't help but muddle up everything. The eps were aired out of order (the series premier was the last ep aired on FOX). The promotionals started out with a bang and were promptly stamped out.

Now that the DVD set is out Whedon is hard at work getting a movie made (and word has it he may have cinched a deal with Paramount).

Releasing the DVD is a both an inexpensive move and a smart one.  Friday night has been a death slot for many shows on Fox.  About halfway through the season I flipped it on, and yeah, it was pretty compelling.
of course, the formula is the anti-startrek: The captain is a great war loser; the ship a creaky old boat used primarily to smuggle contraband; the crew includes prostitutes, fugitives, thugs, psychotics and insecure males. I don't think PC had much to do with it (please, we're talking about Fox here), so much as bad ratings coupled with what probably was a pretty significant budget.

Come to think of it, while futuristic Dystopia is a formula that sells pretty well on the big screen, I can't think of many TV series that play that angle.  It's usually some optimistic crap.

Dinger,
I was saying Starkrap the next pile of poo was the PC crap. I ****ing hate that show.... blad chars, bland lame plots, lame looking ships. THE PRIME DIRECTIVE

ALL lame all the time.

Kirk and crew where ok, all the other startrek stuff was bland boring geekbate.

I know what you meant.  Nobody can disrespect captain kirk wearing a girdle and delivering a clinching monologue full of facile sixties social commentary to a bunch of facepainted aliens.  That's the gold standard.

But ST: TNG is superfriends at warp 7.  There's no problem they can't solve with the best technology in the universe, the best minds, and melodramatic social non-commentary.  Well, there is one problem, and they had to create it at the start.

They should have given Worf the helm of a battle cruiser and his own show.

TPIguy: saw a couple eposides, it was ok. Never watched enough to get into the plot though.

There was no plot to speak of besides them trying to figure out what was wrong with the girl and why the government tried to re-capture her.

GtoRA2: And the part where he tries to trade the captian for his favorite gun for the girl! Awsome!

Quote
Mal: "Are you offering me a trade?"

Jayne: "A trade!? Hell, it's theft. This is the best damn gun made by man. It has extreme sentimental value. It's miles more worthy than what you got."

Mal: "What I got? She has a name."

Jayne: "So does this!" (caresses the gun lovingly) "I call it Vera."

Mal: "Well, my days of taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

 :)

Dinger: I don't think PC had much to do with it (please, we're talking about Fox here)...

I did not mean Fox was affected by PC in this case - the audience was. Certainly the critics in the major media, hence the bad ratings.

Come to think of it, while futuristic Dystopia is a formula that sells pretty well on the big screen, I can't think of many TV series that play that angle. It's usually some optimistic crap.

I beg to differ. What was shown was certainly no futuristic dystopia as in post-apocalyptic "Mad Max", "Postman" or "Waterworld". Quite the opposite - the Union won, the state is strong, democratic and kinda benevolent, there is plenty of wealth, certainly a lot of order and most people live comfortable lives as long as they toe the line and do not venture too far into uncivilised regions.
It is no more dystopia that our modern american or european reality.

Personally, I like "Enterprise". They actually have inter-species sex on there.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.
