Get this garbage off my computer!
« on: April 20, 2004, 10:02:15 AM »
There's alot of talk lately of Spyware, Adware, etc.

I'm wondering how much of this crap is taking up my HD and using CPU power.

Anyone know of a one shot program that cleans all the crap off your HD and optimizes your system.

I have all the Mcaffee tools and spybot.

Anything else I should have?

Thanks in advance.

I've found that Ad-Aware gets some that Spybot does not.

I've also found that Spybot gets some that Ad-Aware does not.

I've run them both sequentially, changing leads so to speak, and each time there's a few the first one doesn't get.

Run them both, make sure you get the updates. I'm using only the free versions, btw.

I switched my browsing to Mozilla Firefox.
No more popups and no more crap installed via the browser.
Most  malware comes that way. You don't even have to visit any dubious sites... just misspell some popular site and they get you.

Make sure to replace your usual browser icon with the new one, so you don't keep forgetting about the change.
You still have to keep an Explorer icon around for the occasional stubborn  site... but those are few among the ones I visit.

Get AdAware.  It is updated every other day, while Spybot is being updated once a month as of late.

Don't accept cookies and don't allow active x files to run and most spyware will not be loaded up.

I use http://www.panicware.com free from http://www.download.com this is a popup blocker.

I use ad-ware 6.0 also from download.com this scans your drives and alows you to quarantine or remove tracking cookies.

don't surf porn.  I use popupstopper from panicware and I use spybot.  Everytime I surf the porn (FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES) :D I run spybot and it finds 5 or 6 new tracking cookies.  Think I'll try mozilla though......
