PCI 128 meg cards, anyone try one
« on: May 23, 2004, 11:13:25 AM »
I'm not going to upgrade my PC untill fall, or winter. So I figured I was out of AH2,( I have a 1gig Celeron with 512ram and a 64 meg PCI based Radeon card). Then Klem told me about 128 meg Radeon cards, my question is...

Since I was just under playable with my present setup, do you think buying the 128 card will do it? and has anyone tried out the 128 PCI cards? are they even worth it?

Thanks in advance for any responses,

If the number of posts with ATI problems ingame I'd go nvidia. Not many posters having problems with them. I'm running a FX5900XT Nvidia card 128 card and it's more than enough. Runs about $179.

Add another 512 stick of ram and see what happens.

Save your money for the upgrade...  I wouldn't buy a PCI card for more than a hundred IIWY.   There are plenty of 128MB Geforce/ATI for 50-75$ sufficient enough for AHII.

Plus isn't this FX5900XT Nvidia card 128  a AGP??? don't have the time to look.

Edit:\

Celerons are junk, however depending on what motherboard you have, it's possible to upgrade to this for 144$: http://www.pricewatch.com/1/3/4377-1.htm

which has twice the l2 cache a regular p3 has and 3 times what you're celeron has!

what OS, if you're not running XP then don't add the memory.  Probably not worth it any way...

even the upgrades I mention probably aren't worth it.

Thanks for the help guys..

I found XFX GForce Nvidia 5200 128 PCI for around $100 Cdn, if like poopless suggests they work better than ATI Radeon cards, maybe i'll go that way. Cause i also found Colorworks Radeon 9200's 128 PCI for about $110 CDN.

My board is an IBM thingy with 512 ram max. I'm aware that the celeron sucks, its just that I need a quick fixfor now, I plan on getting a P4 with 800mhz board later, but the industry will be flipping over soon, and i wanna wait for the deals. U know, when P5 comes out, or whatever.

Also I found 256 meg PCI cards, but the consumer reports say they suck, for the price. So I guess it comes down to which chip works best with AH2, Gforce orRadeon?

Thanks again for the help.

A pci card was the only option for me as I didn't have an apg slot.

I bought an nvidea g force fx 5200 pci 128mb ddr,and I find AH 2 works as well for me as anyone else,i'm getting the minor bugs that we are all getting irrespective of graphics card.

I have 2 ghz cpu and 512 mb ram,os xp home edition.

The card cost 59 pounds here in the UK,thats $106 dollars in the US.but I get the impression hardware is much less expensive over there.

Anyway I'm happy with the card, although staff at the store seemed to think ATI Radeon 9600 xt would have been a better buy,had I had an agp slot this was my first choice, but it does cost 99 pounds in the UK.

Good luck.    Vulch me ,HO me,but not the chute! Pleeeese!!!

Don't get too wrapped up with the amount of onboard memory on your video card.  A lot of games don't come close to flooding a 64MB card, much less a 128MB card.  AH will not even come close.
A 64MB card is fine for AH.

If you are a hardcore Quake 3 player or some of the other, newer games out, then ok, get the big mem cards.

If you will be upgrading later this year, save your money and get a good AGP card.  Don't waste too much on a PCI card that isn't going to give you anymore frame rate than what you got now.  AH is as much dependent on the CPU as it is on the video card.  To prove it, I have a GeForce4 TI 4200 and a RADEON 9800 Pro.  On games like half-life, etc the RADEON kicks the GeForce to the ground, but in AH, I get pretty much the same frame rates (with the same settings for anti-aliasing, etc).

Running as well with a PCI card 128MB I was wondering how the frame rate in AHII should be. Anyone knows? In AHI I have a frame rate of about 50, but in the beta version of AHII it's only 25.
While being in AHII, others tell me they would have 60 and 70 frame rate and running with Radeon 9800 AGP slot.

Need to remember, frame rates are equal to sum of all the parts.  So if someone has the same video card but a Proc at half the speed, performance will differ.  You really should post your full specs to get an better response.

If your going to upgrade later on this year wait for pcx. It is the new version of pci slot. It will kick the fastest AGP slot arse any day. It runs at 16x speeds. Most motheboards at first are going to have it will be Intel because Nvidia and Intel formed an partnership for the pcx slot. Nvidia has already made some pcx graphics cards for certain people use and test. You can stop by the Nvidia site to read more if ya like to.
