I utterly detsted Regan's policitcs (which Maggie Thatcher adopted) when he was the President of the US.  I thought he was a war mongerer par extrodinairre.

After he died, I was driving down from Lancashire to London (about a 3 hour trip) and the Beeb were doing a a very long piece on his life on the radio. The longer I listened to it, the more I thought, 'Hey, the guy might have had a point after all'.

The thing that struck me the most was this:

He may have been clueless (I'm sorry, I thought that Carter was streets more intelligent than he was) , but his heart was in the right place. I think he was a very decent, honest man, and for that, I'm glad.

Because I assumed his remarks were on the same order as his lies about military service.  You seem to have ignored that one, Iron. :)

In November 1983, Reagan told visiting Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir that he had served as a photographer in a U.S. Army unit assigned to film Nazi death camps. He repeated the story to Simon Wiesenthal the following February. Reagan never visited or filmed a concentration camp; he spent World War II in Hollywood, making training films with the First Motion Picture Unit of the Army Air Corps.

I remember we discussed this one before Curly. After giving it more thought it doesn't have to be a lie or even an attempt to mislead if taken out of context. Consider their conversation may have gone something like this:

Shamir, "So Ronnie, I understand you were in the Army Air Corps during WWII?"

Reagan, "That's right Yitzy. In fact I was assigned to the same unit that photographed the nazi death camps."

I'm not saying it happened this way, only that I consider it  possible without further info. I may do a search to see exactly which units did both later.

OK, the 1st Motion Picture Unit definitely had combat camera units. Whether they filmed nazi death camps isn't mentioned in this article but is certainly plausible.

Combat Camera Units

Combat Camera crews were trained by the First Motion Picture Unit at the Page Military Academy, only a half mile from the studio. Each crew was composed of seven Officers and 20 to 30 Enlisted men, depending on the theater of War they were sent to.

The training consisted of very intensive instruction in photography with a variety of motion picture and still cameras. Thorough training in the maintenance of' the cameras, aerial camera work under true flight conditions, often across the country. Rigid physical training, simulating ground combat, as well as the use of combat weapons.

The Camera Units, after training was completed, were sent out to all Army Air Force fronts throughout the World. They were on bombing raids as a matter of routine. The raids took many casualties and percentage-wise were high but many members of the Units received the most commendable decorations.

Nope.  He made a big deal of it.  He spoke at some length about the horror of entering the camp & etc.

In a phrase, he lied.

The merciful thing about that particular affliction is that they don't know any different.

Yeager, it happened so long ago, I can't honestly say I heard Reagan make the remark on TV.  I think I did, but I might be wrong.  However, it was widely reported by *all* newsmagazines as well as the major newspapers.

Heck, I kept the Time issue for years because I thought it was so funny.  I still have the Jimmy Carter playboy interview. :)

There are numerous webpages if you care to use google or yahoo - you can easily find it.  Look for something like "presidential blunders"

Schadenfreude...Schaden and then Freude.......misspelling as an insult is well........lame, the only effect it has is to show that the user is really, really dim - but if it makes you feel better about things, carry on - 15 year olds will be jolly impressed.

On a lighter note, still being  bothered by the homoerotic fantasy's or are you starting to enjoy them?

I actually do stand on the side of the Law - fortunately in the country I choose to live in the Law would probably lock you up.
