UN came in 88/89 after my time...4 years was enough  for me, glad it was over, the last year or so was very rough - I think most people were just glad to be able to go home.

The Liberals and Democrats offered negative, dark visions ( some things never change)....Reagan offered promise and hope, and delivered.

President Reagan, and God bless you.

Holy smokes!  Nuke, do you really mean this?  You would rather have someone blow smoke up your arse and make you feel better than hear the truth?

Sure, politics as usually would demand that Carter would have gone up there and said, "America is Strong, Our people are great and our Country couldn't be in better shape", but that wasn't the case.

Sure, he wasn't a very good President, but IMO at least the poor bastard had the guts to tell the truth.  Maybe that's why he wasn't so good AT being President.....

huh....  what a weird world this is sometimes

"There are those that make things happen, those that watch things happen, and those that wonder what happened."

Reagan was the first, Carter the last.

I totally agree with you.

I just found the statement Nuke made a little shocking.  I took it as saying that he would rather be made to feel better about a situation than the situation is....  This IMO is one of the big problems with our general puplic.  They like the guy that tells them everything is good and not to worry, even when it's not.

but, I could be reading it wrong......

Nuke you have a habit of denying you type things like this later. So I will quote it for you for prosperity.

On subject. Not everyone in the world will love Reagan.  For his country though he was a great leader. He would have gotten a third term I would think. I dont know what else we want from leaders.

sorry curly... I still would like to see what he really said not what someone from the "washington monthly" doing a satire piece said he said.   It had to have been reported somewhere.   Or it didn't exist.

Highly unlikely Time/Newsweek/etc has its 80s archives digitized, eh?  Nonetheless, I read it in newsweeklies and newspapers.  Obviously, others read it and chuckled about it or it wouldn't have made the mendacity report.

Your loss, feller.  The truth is rarely painless and much easier to simply ignore.

Picture Carter as the captain of your airline flight when something minor goes wrong with the plane. He's the kind of guy that would come on the radio and say "well, something went wrong with the plane folks and I'm afraid I don't know how to fix it or overcome the problem.... you should all expect to die on this flight"

That's basically the vision Carter gave us.

it could have made the "mendacity report" for a lot of reasons... not the least od which is that the opinion of the columnist in question is affected by him being a wussy left wing nutjob with an agenda.

I liked the one I recall where klinton claimed to be so affected by all the black church burnings that he seen as a kid in arkansas... he even had a tear in his eye when I saw the speech... someone did the research and.... zero  that's it... zero black churches were burned in arkansas during that time period.

Sung at Carter's Inaugural Ball by Paul Simon:

Many's the time I've been mistaken,
and many times confused
Yes, and I've often felt forsaken,
and certainly misused.
Ah, but I'm all right, I'm all right.
I'm just weary to my bones.
Still you don't expect to be bright and bon vivant,
so far away from home,
so far away from home.

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered.
I don't have a friend who feels at ease.
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered,
or driven to its knees.
Ah, but it's all right. It's all right.
For we've lived so well so long.
Still, when I think of the road we're travelin' on,
I wonder what's gone wrong.
I can't help but wonder what's gone wrong.

And I dreamed I was dying.
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly,
and looking back down at me, smiled reassuringly.
And I dreamed I was flying,
and high up above my eyes could clearly see
the Statue of Liberty sailing away to sea.
And I dreamed I was flying.

And we come on the ship they call the Mayflower.
We come on the ship that sailed the moon.
We come in the age's most uncertain hours,
and sing an American tune.
Oh, and it's all right, it's all right,
it's all right.
You can't be forever blessed.
Still tomorrow's gonna be another working day
and I'm tryin' to get some rest;
that's all - I'm trying to get some rest.

maybe it was the poor bastards policies that made us all feel miserable.  It was the Dems who invented the misery index, unemployment + inflation. Now that’s real optimistic.  I remember the carter years very well. He was a joke.

we had lost in Vietnam, we had Nixon ***** up, we had doldrums through ford, then that clown Carter, after 30 plus years of pessimistic thought Reagan came in and gave us hope once again, llead  us to believe in ourselves once more and made America strong, defensively, economically. And he put the fear of GOD and The US in the soviets.

Speaking of inflation
