My brothers system here, P3 500 with a 16 meg vidio card "not sure the brand off my head but not top of the line" and I could get between 45 and 55fps never dropping below  40 running low res 800 by 600. I dont play on it anymore because I cant affoard a new system and would have to have one if I got used to his

Rude:

With a Celeron 300 O/C to 450, 128 MB RAM and a 32Meg CL TNT card mine does about 45 frames in 1024 hi res, dropping to 35 in the furballs. It was a relatively cheap setup too..$90 for the Chip, $100 for the MB and the CL card was low too.

Don't think any of those older Celerons are around now tho.....

Rude,

Have a Celeron 400 O/Ced to 450Mhz.  64 M RAM, Viper 550 16 Mb,  Normal 36-44 FPS,  Furball 30-35 FPS.

Trying to talk wife into letting me get a Celeron 500.

My advice is for the most bang for your bucks go here ->  http://www.step-thermodynamics.com/   and get the Celeron 366 package, guaranteed to run 550 mhz. If your not convinced the Celeron is the best option for you go to Intels web site and browse through their performance indicators for the Celerons and compare them to the P-III`s. They no longer have the data available for the 550 mhz P-III`S but the Celeron 500 (66mhz FSB) hits 57 on Winbench 2000 floating point performance in 3-D apps, the P-III 650 mhz(100mhz FSB) only hits 59 in the same test. This is Intels "dirty little secret" The Celerons are still the king of CPU`s for 3-D gaming-expect even better performance with the 366@550 mhz (100mhz FSB) Hope this is of help to you.

I don't have a fast machine, P2-366, with TNT2 Ultra, but still maintain 35-41 FPS in high res(1040X) with min. 30 FPS on runway.  I would venture to guess that anything over a 266 would probably get good FR as long as you have a good video card.

I have a Celeron 266 that is on a Slot 1 board.  The new Celerons seem to be PGA, rather than Slot1 1.  How do I put a new PGA Celeron in my system?  Is there a Slot 1 adapter?  Can I just pop the old Celeron out of its socket, and pop a new one in?

Is there a standard test like they use to benchmark Warbirds ?? Have a look at this URL (check out the framerate link) and see what users are getting with there systems, I think the AH graphic's engine is much the same as the WB's
 http://wbexperience.tripod.com/framerate.html

My Sys

Celeron 300A(@504) 128MB CLTNT2-Ultra

FPS @ 1024
50's normal flight
70's at high alt
30's in the thickest furballs

If you are in the market for a CPU I'd get a Celeron if you are looking for value for money.

I put my sys together for flight sims and I picked a celeron.

Well i have a 300a @ 450 with a voodoo3 3000 and i get around 65 - 70 when flying alone. 60-65 with flying in a group, and never go below 60 when in a furball.

I'd go with the celeron.  they are easy to overclock if the default sped wont cut it anymore.  I heard the new 533's can go to 600 pretty easy.

Since you can get a celey 500 for about 130 if you look. i'd fork that out and wait on the PIII's to come down.

Oh yea,  i'm running at 1028x768

Ya know I was gonna let this whole Intel posting ride, until I read the post a few from here.

How come you all don't talk about the AMD K-7? A far less costly 810 Mhz processor. Already clocked at over 1000mhz!

Answer me this. Any of you using a 32bit operating system like NT? I bet you all use WIN9x, a 16bit OS, with a 32bit emulator.
The P-3 call chips are killer 32bit CPUs. Designed to run on a 32bit OS.
Get my drift. Until Gates or Redhat comes up with a purely P&P 32 bit OS, I'll stick with AMD.

Both the celron and pentium III have the same FPU (the thing that does all geometry in case you dont know)**  exception would be a GPU which offloads the CPU but thats another ballgame.(Geforce owners)

At equal clock speeds they should be within 1-2 fps given similiar hardware.

Now future games may employ the special instuction set which is similiar to MMX but more 3D oriented.

Those games would take advantage of the P3 and really produce a higher framerates due to the extra instruction set.

software makers are just now adopting this coding.

My advice is buy a celron they are really the best bang for the buck.

My total setup for a 300a--->450 barebones was about $400 US delivered and that was a year ago.

current prices for say 500mhz cel with 64 megs barebones is about $300-400 give or take specials...compare that with 500-700 for the P3 and you make the choice..

For gamers the celron is king of the low ball systems...

good luck.

Popeye you can put a PPGA Celeron in your PC by using a "slotket" adaptor. Make sure your mobo`s BIOS can be updated to support the latest Celerons before you buy.
