I seem to recall that somebody (HiTech?) said that every WWII pilot he'd asked the question "How much could you see behind you?" had stated that they could turn enough to see their verticle stabilizer. That is something that Il-2 doesn't come close to.
Remember, you wouldn't be belted in tight to the seat without any ability to move your torso. You bleted in loosely so that you could see around you. If you can't see the enemy, you're at a disadvantage.
That said, I wouldn't mind seeing snap views disabled and then changing the view system so that if you are looking over the right wing, then look back and then want to look to the left rear it rotates through the forward view to get there.
