Does it change anything that I think I was clocked from the air?

One of my customers manufactures police radar. I don't know if the hand held units are capable of storing info like your speed and a pic of your car but they have larger more sophisticated units and it wouldn't surprise me if they were capable of recording that.

What, are you stupid enough to be going over 88mph over the same stretch under the same circumstances? I'm guessing 'no' here. Cops in general are not your enemy. They realize that people aren't perfect and sometimes need a break once in awhile.
Had you been mouthing off to him and showing all kinds of disrespect, you'd of seen a much more accurate number on your ticket (not to mention the possibilty of being hauled off to jail).
He's hoping you'll be doing the right thing.

I remember getting a speeding ticket along with a no seatbelt ticket ( which I was wearing, but took off before the cop got to my car after I stopped) when I was 24, had cancer, living on my own, working full time, flat broke.

I paid the tickets.

yeah, had non-hodgkins lymphoma. I was actually pulled over after driving myself home after a VERY painful bone marrow test.

I seem to be clear so far, 39 years old and kicking.

Speeding Ticket Question..

If you were doing more than 65 MPH the cop most likely did you a favor because in most areas more than 20 MPH over is considered reckless endangerment and has far higher penalties.  In some areas this means an automatic suspension of your license, usually for 90 days.

And yes he probably knew exactly how fast you were going.  There is absolutely no requirement to tell a motorist the maximum speed you clock them at, only how fast you are citing them for.  It is perfectly acceptable to cite a motorist for a lower speed than they were clocked at.

What it amounts to--

Be honest with yourself.  You admit you were speeding.  You hint that you were doing substantially in excess of what you were cited for.  Pay the ticket.

SaburoS--

Why do you assume that the officer has to be lying if his clocked speed is higher than actual speed?  Do you know how lidar/radar units work?

Bluffing is what I was aiming for. Depends on the circumstances involved.

Hire a lawyer, save your license points, keep your insurance from going up.

Or you can "do the right thing" and get points off your license, a rate increase on your insurance and depending on the company possible cancellation of your policy. If you drive at work, you must also inform your boss or you may violate policy and be subject to termination. It could also be a mark against possible promotion even if you do tell. But hey, the cop was a nice guy just out to help you.

Saburo--

In any case that question was answered after both of us wrote our posts (I didn't post mine as soon as I wrote it due to leaving the PC for a bit).  BBS topics at this hour don't usually gain responses this quickly.

BLCKMGK--

Police have some discretion in what they cite people for in certain circumstances.  There are several motives for him to give you less than the maximum citation.

One possible motivation is simply that speeding at twice the posted limit on a deserted road at 2AM is substantially less dangerous than doing it in rush hour, and maybe the fine should reflect that in a way a maximum citation would not.

A few other possible reasons for his use of discretion were discussed above.
