The thing I, as a non-American, find strange about this thread and some of the views is that, if she had for example dedicated her encore to Hussein being captured or an end to oppression, or a certain leader's support for the US after 9/11, the expressing of those political views would have been accepted (not that they would have been reported tho).

But it seems to me that because it is views that are unacceptable to half the population, and more than half of the people who have frequented this thread, then she should display no political views whatsoever.

Dont deny that there are some political things she could have said which, whilst not directly affecting the USA itself, were still political views, would have resulted in all or most of the conservatives in this thread saying 'you go girl'.

Ahhh I thought about going back for an MBA, never could rekindle the drive.   BA w/ a double major, CJ/business w/ a minor in Psych, Minnesota State.

As you now know, we do not live in a democracy.

Shuckins, from what I've seen it was not an "in your face" speech. Ronstadt is not widening the political gap in this country. It is a symptom of this country's current leadership. The old "If you're not with me, you're against me" routine wears thin after a while.

To say that Moore released his film in such a manner as to prevent legal action against it is just plain ignorant. He also used the secret science of editing...oh, my, god! Have you ever seen a film by Moore? That is his whole commando style of filmmaking. To criticize the film for it's editing is like criticizing a James Bond film because he had these "silly spy gadgets".

Only conservatives are acting this way. I don't see liberals throwing a temper tantrum everytime a performer backs Bush. Take Toby Keith for instance. You don't see riots after his shows.

I suspect if investigated further we might discover a common link amongst those causing the disturbance, likely republican. Embrace the fact that to be a NeoCon is to believe you are better than everyone else and continue to act that way.

Steve, why do you think that "republic" and "liberal democracy" are mutually exclusive?

rpm,

I've already stated that she can say whatever she wants in public or private.  Ronstadt's fans run the political gamut from far left to far right.  She knows this.  She should have known that the casino contained fans who would find her remarks offensive.  If she didn't then she is a total featherhead.  At the very least, it was an insensitive thing to do.  Once she exercised her first amendment rights, the fans were free to exercise theirs.  Defacing the posters may have been a bit over the top, but there was no physical violence.

Liberals have no lock on manners and courtesy.  I remember the sixties well...where people on both sides of political issues attempted to shout each other down, and anti-war activists spit on returning soldiers.  But...I guess one could say they were just exercising their first-amendment rights...couldn't one?

A public performance given for paying customers is an entirely different thing from an interview given to a reporter.  There is a time and a place for everything...and the concert was the wrong time and place to be making political statements to a captive audience.

I agree that extreemist liberals have done some shameful things that I don't support in the past. But, as the old saying goes 2 wrongs, don't make a right.

If they disagreed that strongly with Linda's remarks they should have boo'ed, left the theater and asked for a refund. Anything else is not "a political statement", it's being an ultra melon.

glas... no conservative or, no man that is not gay or a pandering  liberal would ever say "you go girl"..

you guys miss the point.   She had her free speech and the audience had theirs.... It doesn't matter what was said only that it was (free speech) and that the audience reacted (free speech).

obviously, she either missjudged her audience, America or her popularity or all three.

Ya know Grun, it never occured to me that it might have been a set-up. You may be on to something.

I was thinking more along the lines of a group or convention being in town.

No you just don't get it.
Attacking police, obstructing traffic, blocking bridges = Free Speech.
Tossing (plastic) cocktail cups, tearing up (paper) posters = Riot.

funked... I understand the philosophy... only the elite can decide what is right and wrong because Americans are, as moore puts it, the stupidest people on the planet.   the elite, like moore, are embarassed by us.

yes... I would say that you are living proof of that as is he.   Even when it becomes apparent to even you that he is a lying scumbag you will simply feel betrayed by one man and believe the next whopper the left jams down your throat on the nightly news or in a (cough) "documentary" by some little angry troll.

Mass media runs the 2 minute attention span this country has. You know it as well as I do. Every outlet has it's own agenda, some to lesser degrees than others. The trick is to know the degree of spin by the source and in which direction.
