Frightening morning
« on: November 30, 2004, 10:02:50 AM »
My girlfriend fainted yesterday morning--the second time this has happened in the last year. The episode lasted for a few seconds. If I had been there at the time, I would have called an ambulance, but as luck would have it, I'd already left. Her friend was the one that witnessed the event.

Both times this took place in the morning, after about 5 hours of sleep, during her monthly cycle, after having not eaten a thing that morning or the previous evening.

She is a healthy, athletic 20 year old. Her main problems are that she drinks too much coffee(without sugar), eats too little and doesn't sleep enough. She is also as hard headed as they come, and refuses to go see a doctor.

I don't know if any of you have had this experience before but if so, is this a product of low blood sugar, or something more profound? The doctor that I spoke with said it was likely the case, but nothing can be known for sure without an EKG.

Medical advice from a WW2 Flight Sim BBS = Bad idea.

Take her to a Doctor = Good Idea.

Trick her if you have to. Call an ambulance if it happens again.

You should get her all hopped up on sugar, give her holistic medicines, and feed her MickeyD's everyday.

Best way to live, evar!

I'm pretty much picking at any straw I can get at this point. If I'd been there when it had happened, she would have been strapped to a gurney before she'd regained her balance. Tricking her will be both difficult and interesting, and after spending most of yesterday and last night thinking of ways to do this, I came with the following tactics:

1.)   Pushing her down next time we go skiing, hopefully causing a strain/sprain rather than break.

2.)   Giving her some bad seafood.

I feel like a bastard for even thinking this but I'm pretty much desperate.

Without being overly personal; some women can have an adverse reaction to some kinds of tampons; especialy if they're left in overnight.

It's called toxic shock syndrome; and can be serious.

And I'd suggest that if she's fainting; then it's serious; whatever it is.

This shouldn't be ignored; it could happen behind the wheel......

check blood sugar.  at least get the possibility of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) off the books.  Even healthy athletic young people can develope insuline resistance (especially if others in family have it).

other than that...could be anything but fainting is not healthy.

BTW fainting during period would have the doctor looking at anemia.

My wife had some similar problems.

It was a problem with being insulin resistant.  They prescribed Metformin, I think that’s how to spell it, any way it helped out.

The only apparent side affects are 1) it makes the menstruation period extremely predictable.  2) helps the resistance to insulin.

And the biggest side affect that may get her to the doctor, it helps with weight loss due to its affects with insulin levels.

I don’t think that’s a good idea. Although she needs to see a doctor, it’s unlikely this is an immediately life-threatening problem. She’s an adult and capable of making her own medical decisions and actually forcing a women to do this (or anything else) rarely works.

Start by trying to understand her before you try to change her mind. Try to find out why she refuses to see a doctor. Despite what she may say initially, it’s usually fear – either she is scared of doctors or she is afraid to learn there may be something seriously wrong. Has she had a bad experience with a doctor in the past? It’s important to validate her concerns, don’t just dismiss them even if you disagree with her logic.

Then try to negotiate. Ask if there is anything you can do to get her to go to a doctor. For example, it might help to offer to go with her if she seems afraid. If you have any friends or family that’s a doctor, nurse, etc. maybe have them talk with her. She might be more likely to listen to them. If she’s afraid there is something seriously wrong, google “vasovagal syncope” and print out some info for her. This is one of the most common causes of fainting in young adults and the long-term prognosis is excellent.

Def. can be low blood sugar..

Could even be High Blood Sugar..

If it happens again, and your home, call an Ambulance for sure!

And if you really love her, ask her to eat some food, drink less coffe, and sleep more, or you'll have to take her to a doctor..

Good luck man, hope all goes well!

Sounds like an iron deficiency to me...or possibly blood sugar levels.
