Communications there are totally screwed up right now and will be for weeks to come.

A Wairarapa man missing from toejamet since the Boxing Day tsunami struck has been found safe and well.

Shane Street, 23, left a message on his father's phone the day the killer waves hit, saying he was thinking of going inland.

The family in Carterton had heard nothing since and concerns about his safety began to mount.

Yesterday, his uncle, Terry Crook, said an e-mail had arrived from Shane, saying he was safe and well.

"He had gone hiking and camping and had just got out of the bush. He was aware that a tsunami had struck India but had no idea it had hit close to where he was. He got quite a shock when he got out."

Mr Street's father, Sid, said Shane planned to continue his OE with a trip to China.

Meanwhile, infection has slowed the recovery of Lower Hutt man Jeremiah Boyack. His leg was broken in three places and his foot badly smashed after the tsunami threw him against a concrete wall.

From hospital in Mumbai, India, Mr Boyack said he had already had six operations. But the infection meant skin grafts and further surgery had to be put on hold.

"I'm slowly getting better," Mr Boyack, 31, said.

"I just got on crutches for the first time the other day. But it's frustrating being in hospital. I'm used to being able to walk around and go where I want to go."

Don't give up Chairboy, but at this point in time I think it may be time to start preparing for the worst.

I don't wanna spoil your hope, but time has gone and _most_ of those in hospitals throughout Thailand have been identified so..

Well.. you know what I think, but there is still a tiny chanse.

I have for good and bad always been a realist, and one should perhaps start to deal with the possible loss by now. From personal experience its good to prepare for the worst cause if one delays things to much they are far worse to cope with.

Now... lets tune in to some more optimistic posters

I hope this turns out with a happy ending Chairboy... having lost a brother, I can honestly say I would not wish that on anyone. I hope and pray for the best.

Keep praying and hopefully he will be found safe and sound.

It's been two weeks, it's time we get realistic. He... would have called by now. Most of my family is coming to terms with this now, that he died in the tsunami.

His flight back was scheduled for next week, and some of the family are going to wait at the gate just in case, but....

Next saturday, the family is having a sort of party/get together in Portland at the Crystal Ball Room. If, against all odds, they show up at the airport, it'll be a welcome home party. If not, well... it'll be about them. I don't know how to read it, gonna go, but kinda strange feeling about it.
