Replacing potentiometers in CH products.
« on: January 28, 2005, 10:59:34 AM »
OK, I have come across a discrepency in my CH gear. I thought I had a pad pot in my Pro Rudders, it would go full left with no input and the wiring ohms out ok. The CH parts page, http://www.chproducts.com/shop/parts.html,  says:
Potentiometer - HP106, 50K, $9.75, Potentiometer for CH Pedals, Marked "900-630".
and
Potentiometer - HP100, 100K, $9.75, Potentiometer for most all of CH's Joysticks. Markings on the back of pot are "HP-100A"

I found the 100K HP-100A pots in both Pro Rudders I have. I have a spare set which was given to me by a squaddie who went USB because I still use older analog equipment.

The question is should I get an identical replacement 100K pot or go with the 50K pot?
I have a question into CH Tech Support but I think they are backlogged due to the holiday and the 12 hour response has come and gone.
I did try using a 100K linear pot I had but it is very spikey even though it is very new. The calibration is also off. Calibration might be off because I had to make the flat spot on the shaft. That flat might effect the centering of the rudders but the far left and far right extremes of rudder travel seem very inconsistant and inaccurate sometimes only going to 20 or 25% of the full travel.

Fuze....

Depends on whether you were satisfied with rudder pedal performance before they failed.

A note on reconstructing your pedals....be careful to insert wires into the guides.  Mine popped out and were pinched/cut by the slides.....not covered by warantee, according to CH, because I opened the case.  (how else was I gonna clean the cola out?)

I was satisfied with it's performance before. I did disassemble my spare Pro Rudders and found the toe brakes use the same potentiometers so I may try to use one of those before I buy new a new pot.
Reassembling those can be tricky. I've had my FX stick, Pro Throttle and of course the Pro Rudders all opened and it does turn to spagetti. I did crimp one wire in the FX stick that went to the sensor to determine your hands on it but luckily didn't damage it. I make extra sure that I don't imitate 'Enzo, the mad crimper' when I put them back together.
So far this week I replaced my joystick #1 button and covered an exposed wire in the Pro Throttle.
I'll  be good to go IF I get these darn rudders working.
Wait, make that WHEN I fix them :)
