That title says it all. What do the veterans recommend?

Your choice of gunsight depends on your personal preference. Pick four sights from the HTC gunsights gallery, or you can hit my site under Files and raid a few of mine. Once you've got four sights you want to try, pick four planes to test them in. I use open center sights a lot because they let me see my target. I've got two sights I made just because I couldn't find an open center one.

Click on the image to download the one you want. Once you've got four sights you like, try each sight in your favorite ride and find out which one is easiest to use/see. It takes a while to do all this, but you will find a sight that fits your shooting ability.

I use a raised sight with most planes.

Check it out in my views article:  http://lephturn.webhop.net/views.htm

I may be a little Bias..but go to the HTC homepage and then from the left side of the page choose gunsight gallery. Then either a K-14 sight or "ammo's" sight. I really like it, others use it and have praised it. Maybe for you maybe not.

Choosing the right sight for air-air gunnery is more of a personal choice than it might seem since your flying and fighting style will directly relate to your success in aerial gunnery.  The key is find a balance between the amount of information displayed (pippers, cross hairs, rings, range lines, rocket aim points, bomb aim points, angled lines, ladders, etc) and its practical usefulness.  Every extra line, dot or dash in a gunsight ultimately covers up some part of the target picture.  If you like to get really close to a target before firing, you can likely use a sight with big and easy to see graphics.  If you are a long distance sharpshooter, thinner and smaller graphics will allow a distant target to be seen easier.  A thick line might obscure a target completely at long range, for instance.

Do you like to use high velocity machine guns or low velocity cannons?  Either of these choices will noticeably affect the amount of lead (how far in front of the other airplane you must aim) needed to hit a target when you are both turning.  The slower the projectile, the greater the lead.  So, range lines that work for a turning shot with a machine gun armed airplane may not work very well if the same sight is placed on a cannon armed aircraft.  Try flying both the P-51 and FW-190D9 with the same sight.  The armament in these two aircraft will allow you to see the extremes that will illustrate this point.

From a personal perspective, I like to use sights that are historically accurate for the planes I fly.  Others find that customized and unique sights work better for them.

Experiment with many different sights to see which style suits you.

S!

I also prefer the historical ones, but for the 190A/F-8 I use the custom one with bomb aim pipper. For the 190A-5 I use the historical one and for the 109's too.

All I use is a sight with 5 pixels on it.  I take the default gunsight with its single pixel in the center, add 4 pixels at each of the four corners (making an 'X') and get rid of all the remaining marks surrounding the sight.

I call it my death dot and have used this type of boresight since my days in AW.  I find anything more in a sight tends to obscure my view more than it helps.

One thing I can't stress enough is to try all kinds of different sights!  Everybody has different preferences, different types of equipment, even different preferred roles within the game.  Download all the different sights you find and spend some time swapping them around.  Choose the one that suits your situation best.

BTW, HTC makes a gallery of sights available for download here:  http://www.hitechcreations.com/sights.html

Have fun.
