Sudden death
« on: June 04, 2001, 11:54:00 AM »
Yesterday I descended on a B-17 from its high 6 in a P-51. I opened fire at about d600, aiming for his right wing. Atleast one engine was smoking at d200, and as I was passing under and to the right of him, he simply exploded in mid-air. I thought it might just be lag, but it doesn't seem likely that about half of my ammo load could annihilate a 17 like that. So I'm wondering if this is some kind of weakness in the 17 itself. I did make a film of it, but none of the films I recorded after Patch 2 are playing back correctly.

Just a guess but you may have hit his fuel tanks and set them ablaze. This is a fairly common event when most of my hits are around the wingroot area.

That would be my guess too, Jim, considering his initial aim point was the wing, a wing-root fire is common in the B17 model when using that as an aim point, which is a preferred aim point when using .50 cal.
