Free speech and expression are not a free ticket to public acceptance.

You just cannot be sanctioned by the government for expressing those ideas.

The public is as free to show it's disapproval of your ideas as you are to express them.

Sure, but getting all high and mighty by saying that everyday you defend the people's right to free speech and then immediately saying that you would deck those very same people if they said something you didn't like is.... well it's hilarious.

and the problem with that is??????

I am reffered to by this guy as "scum""leaches"and being told to abandon my unit and I'm supposed to like it??????

High and mighty I am not, I don't approve of what they have to say and AGAIN will defend their right to say it.  That doesnt mean I don't want to punch this guy in the face multiple times.  It's absolutly insulting Nash.

EDIT:

This is not about politics this is my life.  I AM a US servicman.  This guys website is directed at me and everyone else serving.  I'm being told I'm over worked, underpaid, scum, a govt. leech, and basically a waist of govt tax dollars.  Why would I not get angry at that.  I could be doing alot of other things in life making a hell of a lot more money but that's not why I do this job.  To say I'm overpaid is insane at best.  You can take your high and mighty comment and shove it up your bellybutton for all I care Nash, this is personal.

Yup. It's a wonderful place... fulla contradictions, inequites and insensitive salamanders with massive 'tudes that have the ear of the president.

Wouldn't trade living here for anyplace else.

Well if you find that insulting, then thank god you are not a politician or a lawyer. There are more than a few good jokes that start out "three lawyers walk into a bar...".

But yeah, much like you, I would bet that the lawyers don't like the insults. And they, like you, defend your right to insult them.

But I'm sure that they, at least, draw a distinction between not liking the remarks and saying that while they do believe in free speech, would rather it not happen.

Hmmm... it doesn't take much talent to be shocking and controversial. Michael Moore and Anne Coulter do it better.

Yawn.

This guy is probably sitting at home watching his traffic count and giggling like a girl at the thought of driving complete strangers into a vein popping, spittle spraying rage.

:aok

God bless America.

That's were you are wrong.  Show me in this thread were I said anything remotly against free speech.  I said I'd throw this guy a beating but that's not saying I'd do it to shut him up.

it was more for the fact that I had to look it up than pointing out an error.

Maybe we're just looking at it differently.

You say that you defend someone's right to say something, then pummel them for excercising it, and still call it free speech.

By your measure, why don't we say that China has free speech. And that if China pummels one of it's citizens for excercising that same right, then it's not because there isn't free speech. It is just because they disagree with what was said. No big deal.

Nash,

Lets say this........If I was at a .50 cent concert wearing a T-shirt that said "I hate N***ers" I would expect to get my bellybutton beat and possible killed.

Now with the exception of death were my civil rights violated????not really I had it coming just like this guy.  Free speech is just that free.  You can say whatever you want to who ever you want.  That doesnt mean your not going to get in trouble or people arent going to be angry at you for saying it.

I don't understand you china analagy as I am not a country and I don't set policy.

I will say it again.  This guy can say what ever he wants.  That doesnt mean I don't want to nore wouldnt hand him a beating if I ever met him.  And yes I will defend his right to free speech just like anyone elses.  I'm using free speech right now to speak out against him.

Well Gunslinger, I guess I can only really explain it by saying this:

It is all well and good to extol the virtues of free speech. But it means nothing if you do not understand nor respect its intrinsic value.

The willingness to defend it despite any personal affront you may feel towards the actual expression of it is virtuous.

The willingness to punish the expression of it through physical violence if that expression isn't agreeable to you is not.

The guy is represents 1 of 296,255,100 viewpoints in America. It's probably not even his actual viewpoint. You can find a handful of people who believe just about anything.

The moon landings never happened...

Aliens are fighting wars in earth orbit that the government is hiding...

All countries in the Middle East should be nuked...

Just ignore him!

How much better off would we be if we just ignored:

- Paris Hilton
- Pauley Shore
- Brad and Jennifer
- The next crappy remake of a Hollywood classic
- 99 percent of all talk radio
- News "pundits"
- 99 percent of all attack campaign ads
- The rest of the Hollywood "A" list and the East Coast socialite scene

The list goes on. Ignore them and they go away.
