Windows Update Won't Update
« on: June 03, 2005, 12:11:41 AM »
Can't get Windows Update to work on my new hard drive.  My computer is otherwise working okay.  I backed up applications and files with Maxtor external hard drive and activated the new hard drive with my old (2002) XP Home Edition which obviously needs all the updating since then.

At first Windows Update worked.  Gave me a few updates.  Made me download SP1 manually.  And then Windows Update goes stupid.  Just sits there.  Won't do anything.

I wrote Microsoft but no reply.

I've scoured the Windows info sites but no joy.

Windows Update is listed as a trusted site on Internet Explorer.

Far as I can tell no pop-up blocker is messing with it.

I access Internet with Comcast Cable and use AOL for e-mail.

I'm sure I need to check a block somewhere or type in a few characters somewhere to revive Windows Update, but I'm drawing blanks so far.

Any of you know the silver bullet?  I'd sure appreciate it.

Why didn't you download SP2 manually? Is your copy of XP legit? After SP1 they start checking.. ;)

Windows Update ceased working entirely after SP1.  Problem was getting Update to work again so Microsoft could identify whatever updates are needed.

My XP is legit.  I don't pirate.

I posted here because Microsoft promised response within one business day, and nothing came by then.  However, this morning, after two business days, received a very clear and detailed response that solved the problem.

Basically, had to fix some corrupted ActiveX Control Files.

Download the full copy of SP2. This should fix it. It's a rather huge file but it will save you a lot of headaches.

When I clicked on Windows Update, the site came on but then did nothing, i.e., did not analyze my computer and identify which updates I needed.

I could download stuff from the Internet but NOT from the Windows Update site.  I wasn't going to go running around guessing which Windows updates I might need, and apparently Windows Update would not let me download stuff anyway without the Windows Update analysis of what my computer needed.

I couldn't figure out the fix on my own, including browsing the Microsoft help and newsgroup areas.  So I wrote an e-mail outlining my problem and the Microsoft response was excellent.  Friendly tone, clear writing, and successful fix.

I thought I did too, and earlier got the SP1 before Windows Update started being unresponsive.

But, as I said before, I needed to restore Windows Update as soon as possible anyway so I declined to pursue further updates without the WUpdate analysis first.

It's a reasonably happy ending.  Still have to tweak quite a few programs since I buried them so deep on my restoral.  Always some aggravation, the main remaining one being somehow I can't restore my microphone yet.

Should be very simple, but for me it isn't.  Only place I use it is Aces High and haven't been flying for a long time.  One of these daze ... Meanwhile, my 5:1 sound is working fine, and that's the main thing.

Could you post the activeX files that were corrupted and the fix please?

Here you go:

(QUOTE)

This issue can also occur due to some corrupted ActiveX Control files. Let us register the following files using the Regsvr32 command and check whether the issue has been resolved. Please note, there is a space between Regsvr32 and the file name.

1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.

2. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wuapi.dll in the Open box and click OK. The same steps to register the following files:

Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

Regsvr32 wucltui.dll

Regsvr32 wups.dll

Regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Regsvr32 jscript.dll

Regsvr32 atl.dll

Regsvr32 msxml3.dll

Regsvr32 softpub.dll
